ATLS is deeply committed to recovery-oriented, person-centered care that respects lived experience as a powerful asset in supporting community healing.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Certified Peer Support Specialist (CPSS) is a trained professional who uses their own personal lived experience of mental health recovery, substance use recovery, or both, to provide hope, advocacy, and practical support to individuals currently navigating their own recovery journey. The CPSS is an integral member of the ATLS clinical team, working alongside Qualified Professionals, licensed clinicians, and medical staff to deliver peer-based services across our Yanceyville, Roxboro, and Greensboro service areas.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Peer Support Services

Provide individual peer support to consumers using a strengths-based, person-centered, and trauma-informed approach grounded in shared lived experience.

Assist individuals in identifying personal recovery goals, building natural support networks, and developing individualized wellness and crisis management plans (including WRAP — Wellness Recovery Action Plans).

Model recovery, self-determination, and hope through consistent, authentic peer engagement.

Support consumers in navigating community systems including mental health services, substance use treatment, housing, employment, and benefits.

Accompany consumers to appointments, hearings, and community activities as appropriate.

Facilitate or co-facilitate peer support groups, recovery education workshops, and community engagement activities.

Provide outreach to individuals who are disengaged or at risk of disengaging from behavioral health services.

Integrated Team Collaboration

Work collaboratively within the ATLS multidisciplinary team, including QPs, licensed clinicians, NPs, and MAT/OAT program staff.

Communicate relevant consumer updates, concerns, and safety observations to the Clinical Services Manager and supervising QP in a timely manner.

Participate in team meetings, case conferences, clinical supervision, and training activities.

Support individuals enrolled in opioid addiction treatment programs by offering peer-based recovery support, destigmatization, and motivational engagement.

Assist with transition planning for individuals moving between levels of care.

Documentation & Compliance

Complete all required service documentation in the EHR within established ATLS timeframes, including peer support progress notes and service logs.

Document peer support services in compliance with NC Medicaid Peer Support Services definitions and billing requirements.

Maintain documentation consistent with HIPAA, ATLS policies, and the NC Peer Support Specialist Code of Ethics.

Participate in internal quality audits and support the QA/QI Officer with peer services compliance.

Accurately record units of service and complete billing documentation per NC Medicaid standards.

Professional Development & Ethics

Maintain active NC Peer Support Specialist Certification, including required continuing education hours for renewal.

Adhere at all times to the NC Peer Support Specialist Code of Ethics and ATLS professional conduct standards.

Engage in reflective practice and individual supervision to support professional growth.

Maintain clear and appropriate boundaries in all peer relationships.

Complete all ATLS-required annual training including trauma-informed care, cultural humility, and mandatory reporting.

Fulfill mandatory reporting obligations per NC General Statutes.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Current, active North Carolina Peer Support Specialist (NC PSS) Certification issued by the NC PSS Certification Board.

Personal lived experience of mental health recovery, substance use recovery, or co-occurring disorder recovery — as a current consumer or person in long-term recovery.

High school diploma or GED.

Valid North Carolina driver's license and reliable personal transportation.

Ability to pass criminal background check and pre-employment screenings.

Basic computer literacy and ability to learn electronic health record documentation.

Strong interpersonal communication skills and commitment to recovery-oriented values.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Experience providing peer support in a community behavioral health, substance use treatment, or integrated care setting.

Completion of WRAP (Wellness Recovery Action Plan) Facilitator training.

Experience with NC Medicaid Peer Support Services billing and documentation.

Familiarity with Motivational Interviewing principles.

Experience supporting individuals with co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders.

Bilingual or multilingual communication abilities a plus.

WORK ENVIRONMENT & CONDITIONS

This is a community-based position requiring regular travel across Caswell, Person, and Guilford Counties. The CPSS will work in a variety of settings including consumer homes, community locations, and ATLS clinical offices in Yanceyville, Roxboro, and Greensboro. A valid driver's license and dependable personal transportation are required; mileage reimbursement is provided per ATLS policy.
