Job summary

Meta House in Milwaukee, WI is seeking a Peer Recovery Support Specialist to provide recovery coaching and trauma-informed, strength-based planning for individuals across the continuum of care.

You will work with a multidisciplinary team, maintain accurate records, attend supervision, and advocate for clients while leveraging lived experience to inspire hope and connect people with community resources.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or equivalent.
• Personal lived experience with mental health challenges or substance use challenges.
• WI Certified Peer Specialist and DHS 72 training.
• Valid Wisconsin driver’s license and ability to drive agency vehicles.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills; organizational abilities.
• Ability to collaborate with internal teams and external partners.
• Knowledge of community resources; proficiency with Epic Connect and MS Office.

Description

To provide peer recovery support services to individuals with substance use and/or mental health needs throughout the Meta House continuum of care by sharing lived experiences, promoting recovery, and fostering resilience.

Essential Functions:

• Serve as the primary Peer Support to an assigned caseload. Provide trauma informed, strength-based recovery planning support based on the individual’s recovery choices, goals, and decisions.
• Coach clients to increase their skills, coping, and problem-solving and healthy behaviors to assist them in accomplishing tasks and goals noted on the service plan.
• 3. Connect clients with community-based resources, services, and support to enhance their recovery. Serve as an advocate, mentor, or facilitator for the resolution of challenges.
• Plan, develop, and facilitate groups.
• Work as part of a multidisciplinary team, providing peer perspective. Communicate and collaborate with colleagues via phone, email, and in-person.
• Perform all required record keeping and paperwork, accurately and timely.
• Attend required meetings and clinical supervision.
• Adhere to ethical guidelines and state certification standards

Secondary Functions:

• With supervisor, ensure coverage of all services as assigned and coverage for colleagues' PTO time.
• Assist with the safe, timely, and organized transportation of clients
• Participate in agency or community-based committees or meetings as assigned
• Assist with other duties to support general program operations and occasional special programs
• Other duties as may be periodically or permanently assigned

Requirements:

• High School Diploma or equivalent
• Possess personal lived experience with mental health challenges, substance use challenges, or both. This may include experience as a parent or as an adult family member of an individual who has experienced mental health or substance use challenges
• Ability to and comfort with sharing recovery story to connect and inspire hope
• WI Certified Peer Specialist
• Training aligned with DHS 72
• Driver’s license, safe driving record, willing to drive agency vehicles and insurable under Meta House’s insurance policy to drive agency vehicles
• Emotional intelligence and resilience when handling crises and long-term exposure to traumatic stories and experiences.
• Effective written and verbal communication skills• Strong organizational, time management, and planning skills.
• Ability to collaborate and communicate with both internal team members and external agencies/partners.
• Able to work with a diverse client population and understand and respect family dynamics from many cultural viewpoints.
• Independence, flexibility, and a mature approach to problem solving.

• Computer skills including proficiency in Epic Connect, Microsoft Office Suite, and other applications

Must be able to:

• All Meta House staff are required to provide proof of vaccination for MMR, Varicella, and annual flu shot.
• Adherence to a non-smoking work environment.
• Tolerate occasional hot or cold days.
• Alternate sitting or standing for extended periods of time at will.
• Lift up to 25 pounds on a regular basis and 40 pounds on occasion.
• Ascend and descend stairs using feet and legs.
• Bend, stoop, twist, squat, and kneel to perform essential functions.
• Reach overhead, and at or below shoulder level.
• Read and enter text or data into a computer or other system.
• Seize, hold, grasp, turn, or otherwise work with hands.

• See clearly at approximately 20 inches or less including use of computers or tablet.
• Visually identify clients and others for reasons including, but not limited to security, presence in the building.
• Valid Wisconsin driver’s license required
• Employees who, as part of their regular duties, transport Meta House clients to and from meetings or appointments in their personal vehicle must carry and maintain proof of current Wisconsin automobile liability insurance coverage at or above the minimum state requirements.
