Job summary

Omaha Public Schools is seeking a Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist (COMS) for the TAC Building in Omaha, NE. You will provide direct O&M services and assessments in schools and community locations as identified on IEPs.

The position is 10-month exempt with duties that include developing IEP goals, tracking progress, and collaborating with related service providers to support visually impaired students.

Qualifications

  • ACVREP Certification in Orientation and Mobility preferred or ability to obtain
  • Completion of Orientation and Mobility Specialist program required
  • Bachelor's degree preferred
  • Strong organization and time management
  • Excellent attendance and professionalism

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct O&M instruction and assessments to students in schools and community locations as identified on the IEP
  • Develop and implement goals and objectives for student IEPs
  • Monitor student IEPs to determine progress and attainment of goals
  • Prepare weekly lesson plans according to the student IEP goals and objectives
  • Document student progress and provide quarterly progress reports
  • Participate in student IEP/MDT meetings and parent/teacher conferences
  • Coordinate with other teachers of the visually impaired, speech-language pathologist, occupational and physical therapists, school nurse, and other staff
  • Provide in-service/training for teachers and staff regarding orientation and mobility
  • Communicate with special and general education staff to ensure consistent procedures
  • Communicate with parents regarding student progress
  • Work with a diverse student population
