Qualifications

Join to apply for the Certified Ophthalmic Assistant FT (BLL) role at Houston Eye Associates

LOCATION: 2855 Gramercy St. Houston, TX 77025. Some travel required with doctor.

Position Summary

Contributes to the organization by working closely with the ophthalmologist to perform basic, advanced, and complex preliminary tests and measurements of the eyes. The OA generally meets with the patient before the Ophthalmologist to obtain medical history and prepare the patient for the examination.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  1. Properly stock, prepare, and maintain the cleanliness of exam rooms during clinic.
  2. Review patient chart for accuracy of information.
  3. Prepare patients for physicians' exam and perform tests based on the visit's specific reasons and physician's preference.
  4. Assist with in-office procedures, ensuring all consent forms are complete and accurate prior to procedures, and clean the room afterward.
  5. Administer topical ophthalmic or oral medications under the physician's direction.
  6. May act as scribe to assist physicians with entering exam information into electronic records, order diagnostic tests electronically, and submit prescription refills approved by the physician.
  7. Assist with preparing letters to patients and referring physicians, diagnostic testing, and follow-up on tests as directed.
  8. Manage scheduling, rescheduling, and cancellations of appointments.
  9. Assist in training other ophthalmic assistants.
  10. Adhere to HEAs policies and procedures, uphold ethical principles and patient confidentiality, and comply with all regulations.
  11. Perform other duties as assigned based on operational needs.
Skills And Abilities
  • Visual assessment and testing (Visual Field, Amsler Grid, HVF)
  • Pupil assessment, tonometry (iCare, Goldmann, Tonopen)
  • Keratometry (manual and automated), ocular motility testing
  • Lensometry (manual and automated), refraction techniques
  • Retinoscopy, basic contact lens knowledge, ophthalmic coding, scribing

Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or GED preferred
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required
  • Uncertified Ophthalmic Assistants must obtain JCAHPO (COA, COT, or COMT) certification within 1 year of employment
  • Minimum 1-2 years' experience working with ophthalmologists
  • Bilingual skills are a plus
