Qualifications

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required within 6 months.
  • Uncertified Ophthalmic Assistants must obtain JCAHPO certification within 1 year.
  • Minimum 1-2 years’ experience working with ophthalmologist.

LOCATION: 1699 Research Forest Drive, Suite 150 The Woodlands, TX 77380 Travel to north HEA locations as needed.

Position Summary

Contributes to the organization by floating to multiple locations as needed, working closely with the ophthalmologist to perform basic, advance, and complex preliminary tests and measurements of the eyes. The OA floater generally meets with the patient before the Ophthalmologist to obtain medical history and prepare the patient for the examination.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Responsible for properly stocking, preparing, and maintaining the cleanliness of exam rooms during clinic.
  • Reviews patient chart for accuracy of information.
  • Prepare patients for physician’s exam. Perform tests based on the specific reasons for the visit and physician’s preference.
  • Assists with in-office procedures.
  • Prepare and ensure all consent forms are complete and accurate prior to in-office procedures. Prepares and cleans room after procedure.
  • Administer topical ophthalmic or oral medications under the direction of the physician.
  • May act as scribe to assist physicians with entering exam information into electronic record. Order diagnostic tests electronically and submit prescription refills approved by physician.
  • Assists with preparing letters to patients and referring physicians.
  • Assists with diagnostic testing.
  • Follow-up on diagnostic tests when directed by physician.
  • Schedule, reschedule, and cancel appointments.
  • Assists in training of other ophthalmic assistants.
  • Must meet and adhere to HEA’s policies and procedures, uphold to the highest ethical principles and patient confidentiality. Complies with all State and Federal regulations.
  • As a floater, this position is designed to travel between HEA locations to support the staffing needs of multiple locations and/or departments. Work location and/or department may be assigned at short notice.
  • Other duties as assigned based on business operational needs.

  • Refraction (utilizing phoroptor, duochrome, fogging, Prince rule, trial frame)
  • Retinoscopy and Refinement (at the COT and COMT level)

EDUCATION

High School Diploma or GED equivalent preferred

CERTIFICATIONS & LICENSES
