Job Description

The Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant (COTA/L) assists in the practice of occupational therapy under the supervision of a Registered Occupational Therapist. The role involves implementing safe and effective occupational therapy services, including evaluating the functional performance of individuals impaired by physical illness, injury, congenital or developmental disabilities, or aging, in collaboration with an Occupational Therapist. The goal is to carry out goal-directed interventions to treat or prevent impairments and maximize independence.

Responsibilities
  • Demonstrate the four NM values: teamwork, patients first, integrity, and excellence in daily work and interactions.
  • Maintain a friendly, approachable, professional demeanor and appearance.
  • Provide accurate information and timely updates to patients and customers, addressing questions and concerns promptly, and guiding them as needed.
  • Utilize effective service recovery skills to resolve problems or service breakdowns.
  • Follow the plan of care set by the Occupational Therapist.
  • Collaborate with team members and communicate effectively across departments.
  • Use resources efficiently and manage work schedules to complete tasks timely.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives and participate in efforts to reduce costs and improve services.
  • Complete daily notes reflecting patient responses, performance, and assessments aligned with treatment plans and discharge needs.
  • Interpret evaluation results with the OTR to identify patient strengths and deficiencies, establishing measurable, functional goals.
  • Select, apply, and modify treatment interventions to meet goals.
  • Provide patient and family education, and work cooperatively with other healthcare team members.
  • Assist in terminating services when maximum benefit is achieved, and participate in discharge planning.
  • Maintain productivity standards and keep treatment areas, equipment, and supplies organized.
  • Communicate effectively with patients and caregivers, respecting their cognitive and language abilities.
  • Develop and sustain professional relationships with healthcare team members and participate in marketing and organizational meetings.
  • Engage in professional growth activities, including continuing education and mentorship roles.
  • Participate in performance improvement and support development initiatives.
  • Rotate services based on census and adapt to policy changes, maintaining safety and compliance.
Qualifications

Required:

  • Associate degree from an ACOTE-accredited Occupational Therapy Assistant program.
  • License to practice occupational therapy in Illinois.
  • BLS certification from the American Heart Association within 90 days of hire.

Preferred:

  • Two to three years of relevant work experience; new graduates with applicable clinical experience and supervision may be considered.
