Job description

Summary of Duties

Implements occupational therapy services under the supervision of an Occupational Therapist. Provides occupational therapy to patients, adult or geriatric, who have conditions that are mentally, physically, developmentally, or emotionally disabling. Performs goal-directed activities to help improve physical or cognitive skills and teaches patients to use assistive devices in order to be more self-sufficient.

Essential Job Functions
  1. Assist with the patient evaluation, under the supervision of an Occupational Therapist, by obtaining information such as occupational role, activities of daily living, history, cognition, perception, strength, and range of motion.
  2. Assist with establishing the patient’s treatment plan and goals.
  3. Provides direct patient care services utilizing appropriate procedures, equipment, and techniques under the supervision of Occupational Therapist.
  4. Modifies treatment approaches to reflect the needs of the patient under the supervision of Occupational Therapist.
  5. Adapts intervention of the environment, tools, materials, and activities according to the needs of the patient and his/her sociocultural contact.
  6. Communicates and interacts with other team members and the patient’s family and care givers.
  7. Formulates discontinuation of patient care and follow-up plans under the supervision of Occupational Therapist.
  8. Provides documentation of patient care in accordance with established criteria.
  9. Prioritizes caseload to ensure that optimal service and patient care are provided in a timely, appropriate, and quality manner.
  10. Maintains treatment area, equipment, and supply inventory.
  11. Participates in continuous quality improvement projects.
Education

Associate Degree in Occupational Therapy with certification from an accredited school of Occupational Therapist Assistant Program; Current license to practice as a Certified Occupational Therapist Assistant from the State of Alabama.

Experience

None required. Three months of on-the-job training will be provided for the individual to become proficient in performing the duties of the job.

Physical Requirements for Essential Job Functions
  1. Must be able to transport and/or lift an object intermittently throughout the work day up to a maximum of 20 pounds.
  2. Must be able to walk, stand, and work for extended periods of time without relief.
  3. Must possess dexterity of arms, hands, and fingers bilaterally.
  4. Must be able to work with hands for up to 12 hours a day.
  5. Must be able to push/pull carts weighting up to 200 pounds.
  6. Must possess sight/hearing senses or use prosthetics that will enable these senses to function adequately so the requirements of this position can be fully met.
