The Preserve is part of Volunteers of America National Services, serving as the Housing and Healthcare subsidiary of the Volunteers of America parent organization. Located on the corner of Plantation Road and 6 Mile Cypress Parkway in Fort Myers, we provide Assisted Living, Memory Support, and Skilled Care Services (Post-Acute Rehabilitation & Long-term care).

POSITION SUMMARY

The Certified Occupational Therapist Assistant (COTA) provides quality ongoing therapy to all patients within the facility per physician’s orders and assists the therapist with resident/patient activities and direct care.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Graduate from an accredited Therapy Assistant program. Eligible for certification and/or licensure per state regulations.
  • Registered or eligible to register as an assistant in the state of employment.
  • Ability to understand medical terminology related to therapy to communicate effectively with residents, staff, and physicians, and to prepare reports.
  • Coordination and dexterity to manipulate tools and materials while instructing residents.
  • Adequate strength and endurance to meet physical demands involved in using equipment and materials.
  • Verbal and written communication skills to understand instructions, communicate with residents, staff, and family, and prepare reports.
  • Motor coordination, manual and finger dexterity for manipulating materials during instruction.
  • Ability to perceive shapes, patterns, and details in specifications and pictures.
  • Willingness to work weekends and holidays on a rotational basis, and to travel or work at other VOA facilities as needed.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/AREAS OF ACCOUNTABILITY

  • Perform therapy treatments and related duties as delegated by the therapist, following physician orders in a safe and professional manner.
  • Report on residents’ progress to the therapist and physician.
  • Modify treatment techniques in consultation with the therapist.
  • Maintain clinical skills, respond to acute changes in patients, and document changes.
  • Teach patients, families, and healthcare providers selected treatment procedures and activities.
  • Assist the therapist in evaluations and complex treatments.
  • Consult with the therapist and physician regarding changes in residents’ conditions.
  • Maintain timely treatment records and progress notes.
  • Assist with planning, scheduling, and coordinating therapy services.
  • Ensure continuous therapy service provision, informing supervisors of upcoming leaves or absences.
