Responsibilities

A Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant (COTA) plays a vital role in patient rehabilitation and care, assisting individuals with physical, mental, or emotional conditions to develop, recover, and maintain daily skills. Key responsibilities include:

  • Patient Care Execution: Under the supervision of an occupational therapist, implement therapeutic plans by teaching patients to use adaptive equipment, guiding exercises, and engaging them in activities essential for recovery.
  • Activity and Program Planning: Contribute to planning and selecting therapeutic activities tailored to each patient’s needs and interests, aligning with the goals set by the occupational therapist.
  • Progress Monitoring: Observe and document patient progress, report changes to the occupational therapist, and adjust interventions to ensure continuous improvement.
  • Patient and Family Education: Educate patients and families about therapy processes, adaptive equipment, and home modifications, providing clear instructions to support ongoing recovery and independence.
Qualifications
  • Degree from an accredited Occupational Therapy Assistant program
  • Current license/certification in the state of practice
