Job description

Certified Occupational Therapist Assistant (COTA) - Acute care

Southside Medical Center in Petersburg, VA

PRN (as needed) Two weekend days per month plus at least one holiday per year (Saturday and/or Sunday; 7AM - 3PM), flat rate

Please note: Prior acute care experience highly preferred

Primary Function/General Purpose of Position

The incumbent shall be responsible for providing, under the direction of an Occupational Therapist, therapeutic interventions in a team environment consistent with the position’s qualifications, professional practices and ethical standards.

The incumbent shall also demonstrate accountability for and contribution to performance improvement activities as applicable, problem solving, and productivity.

Employment Qualifications

  • The incumbent shall be a graduate of an AOTA approved Associate’s degree program or shall have completed equivalent training and hold an applicable and current state license or certification to practice.
  • Experience working with adult and geriatric populations is desirable.
  • Experience working in the acute care setting is desirable however is not required
  • Current BLS certification required or obtained within ninety days of completing new employee orientation.

Essential Job Functions

Clinical Area

  • Provide age appropriate therapeutic interventions as directed by the Occupational Therapist.
  • Monitor patient response to treatment.
  • Document the course of patient care in the electronic medical record including progress made and continuing need for treatment.
  • Provide patient and family education on tasks and resources that support continued functional independence and document same in the electronic medical record.
  • Collaborate with the Occupational Therapist to develop new methods of delivering education to patients and family.
  • Participate in discharge planning as part of the interdisciplinary team.
