Description
Position Summary
Provides treatment according to a plan developed by, or in collaboration with, a licensed Occupational Therapist. Works to restore or improve physical abilities, promotes behavioral changes, adapts surroundings, and teaches new skills in order to optimize physical and/or mental functioning in daily life tasks.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (*CF indicates Critical Function)
- Works in conjunction with the supervising Occupational Therapist to implement a comprehensive patient care treatment plan. Renders care delineated by the supervising therapist (*CF).
- Administers treatment in an organized, professional manner adhering to all department policies, best practice standards, NYS practice acts, and physician protocols. Implements and updates treatment programs in conjunction with the supervising Occupational Therapist to ensure maximum effectiveness. Involves patient/family in treatment and accommodates for individual needs (cultural differences, language, etc.) (*CF).
- Maintains a positive, professional working rapport with patients, peers, and referral sources. Collaborates with the Occupational Therapist regarding re-assessing the patients to keep referral sources informed of patient status in a timely manner. Effectively communicates with the Occupational Therapist regarding patient status in a timely manner. Willing to assist other members of the interdisciplinary team when asked.
- Completes all documentation within established timeframes and according to regulatory and department guidelines. Documentation represents accurate accounts of treatment rendered and response to the treatment. Provides written and/or verbal communication to referral sources, patients, families, and other members of the interdisciplinary team (discharge planning/SW/other therapy personnel/nursing staff) in a timely fashion (*CF).
- Assists in performance improvement activities as needed to ensure quality is consistent with established guidelines and to improve the delivery of services rendered.
- Provides training to healthcare providers as directed by manager/director (students, volunteers). Participates in community educational programs and scheduled meetings as requested by the manager/director.
- Keeps the treatment area clean, organized, and safe for patients and staff.
- Maintains a productive caseload and productively utilizes non-scheduled treatment time. Communicates with manager/director regarding their schedule and use of nonproductive time to enhance efficiency.
- Provides accurate billing information in a timely manner, maintains compliance with insurance guidelines, and completes all required documentation for reimbursement.
- Completes all required training and in-services.
- All other duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Qualifications
- Graduate from an accredited occupational therapy assistant curriculum with an associate's degree satisfactory to the NYS board of occupational therapy and in accordance with the NYS commissioner's regulations.
- Licensed and registered to practice in NYS as a COTA, or eligible for a limited permit.
- 2-3 years experience as a COTA in long-term care preferred.
- CPR certification preferred.
- Proficiency with computers and standard office software.
- Excellent customer service and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to multitask.
- Demonstrated knowledge of appropriate skills for communicating with individuals of all ages, especially the geriatric population.
