The Certified Occupational Therapist Assistant will work under the supervision of our Occupational Therapists to assist students in developing essential skills for daily life, academics, and social participation. Their role involves implementing treatment plans, adapting the environment, and collaborating with teachers and families to support student success.
Essential Job Functions
- Implementing Treatment Plans: implements individualized therapy plans designed by the OT, focusing on fine motor skills, sensory processing, and self-care.
- Direct Student Support: provides direct support to students, offering guidance and assistance with activities of daily living and educational tasks.
- Collaboration and Communication: works closely with teachers, parents, and other school staff to integrate OT strategies into the classroom and home.
- Documentation and Reporting: document student progress, prepare reports, and communicate findings to the OT and other professionals.
- Adaptation and Modification: helps adapt learning materials and the school environment to meet individual student needs and abilities.
- Assisting with Assessments: assists with the assessment process, collecting data, and observing student performance under the supervision of the OT.
- Professional Development: stays informed about current practices in pediatric occupational therapy and participates in professional development opportunities.
Specific Tasks
- Preparing Therapy Materials: COTAs prepare and organize therapy materials and equipment.
- Maintaining Student Records: They assist in maintaining student records, charts, and reports.
- Assisting with Classroom Activities: They may help organize classroom activities, arrange furniture, and create an orderly learning environment.
- Providing Instruction: COTAs instruct students, teachers, and parents on positioning techniques, equipment use, and other aspects of therapy.
- Maintaining Equipment: They are responsible for maintaining therapy equipment and supplies.
- Participating in Meetings: COTAs participate in meetings and contribute to developing and reviewing Individualized Education Programs (IEPs).
Qualifications And Skills
- Certification: COTAs must be certified by the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT) and licensed by the state.
- Experience: Experience working in a school or educational setting is preferred.
- Communication Skills: Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are crucial for collaborating with teachers, families, and other team members.
- Assessment and Intervention Planning Skills: Needs strong skills in assessment and intervention planning.
- Passion for Working with Children: A passion for working with children and thrive is essential.

Ability to carry out instructions furnished in written or oral form.
Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide, and perform arithmetic operations as needed to complete duties
Ability to understand, apply and use personal computers and software applications (e.g., Word, Excel).
Ability to work with a diverse group of staff and students.
Ability to maintain confidentiality of information regarding students, employees and others.
Ability to establish a rapport with students in order to provide instruction and progress monitoring
Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students, staff and others contacted in the course of work.
Ability to report work orally or in writing to supervisor and IEP team members
Effective writing and verbal communication skills.
Physical And Mental Demands, Work Hazards
Works in standard office and school building environments.
Ability to observe to student responses for conducting evaluations and student observations.
General writing abilities to create clear, concise, and grammatically correct reports.
Ability to use word processing to create assessment reports.
Ability to attend team meetings to verbally present results of evaluations.
Requires prolonged sitting or standing.
Occasionally requires physical exertion to manually move, lift, carry, pull, or push objects or materials.
Occasional stooping, bending, and reaching.
