Job summary

Milwaukee Center for Independence Inc. (CFI) seeks a Certified Nursing Assistant who also serves as a driver to support our pediatric program at the Milwaukee campus.

The role combines direct patient care with safe transportation duties on designated routes. You will assist with basic nursing tasks under supervision, support children with developmental and academic needs, and follow all safety and regulatory requirements, including CPR and defensive driving, to ensure reliable, compassionate

Qualifications

  • CPR certification required or must be obtained within 30 days of hire.
  • First aid certification required or obtained within 90 days of employment.
  • Experience with pediatric special needs clients preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise and ensure safety of clients in a multi-discipline care setting.
  • Perform basic personal care tasks and light housekeeping.
  • Provide basic nursing skills within level of competency and as delegated by a licensed nurse.
  • Collaborate with childcare staff to meet developmental and academic needs of the child.
  • Operate PSC vehicles along designated routes and ensure rider safety.
  • Maintain driver logs, vehicle inspections and related documentation.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Job Purpose: The Certified Nursing Assistant/Driver functions in a dual role as a member of the patient care team. As a certified nursing assistant this role performs basic caregiving tasks within the scope of certification and demonstrated competence and performs nursing tasks delegated by and under the direction and supervision of a registered nurse or other licensed personnel. As a driver, this role is responsible for safely operating a vehicle (van or minibus) to pick up and drop off children enrolled in the program.

  • Responsible for the supervision and safety of clients in a multi-discipline care setting. Observe client activities and determine when clients are in need of personal care, detect areas of danger, and communicate clearly with clients and staff.
  • Performs basic personal care tasks and light housekeeping tasks.
  • Provides basic nursing skills and basic restorative services within level of competency and as delegated by a licensed nurse.
  • Works collaboratively with childcare staff to meet all aspects of developmental and academic needs of the child.
  • Cleans equipment and supplies after use and reports any deficiencies or unsafe equipment to the RN in charge or appropriate personnel immediately.
  • Operates Pediatric Specialty Care (PSC) vehicles over designated routes or in response to dispatcher/supervisor instructions. Aid clients when boarding and exiting vehicles. Ensure the safety of all riders by using their appropriate passenger restraining device.
  • Comply with all driver and passenger record keeping requirements, including daily driver trip sheets, vehicle inspections, rider pickup and drop‑off times, Title XIX (MTM Contract requirements) rider or physician documents plus parent or caregiver correspondence.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Required Education: High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum Required Experience: Experience with pediatric special needs clients is preferred.
  • Required License – Certification – Registration: Current WI Nursing Assistant Certification, without limitations. Currently registered on the Wisconsin Nurse Aide Registry.
  • Travel Type: Up to 50%
  • Required Valid Driver’s License: Valid driver’s license.
  • Required Auto Insurance: Vehicle liability insurance in accordance with Agency policy.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Must either be CPR certified at hire or complete CPR certification course within 30 days hire. Must maintain active CPR certification through periodic renewal as dictated by the certification.
  • Ability to complete the required competencies within the first 90 days of employment:

  • Accurately and promptly communicate PSC Participant or parent/caregiver concerns to designated PSC staff.
  • Ability to read and understand a map of the PSC service area (Milwaukee County) and utilize navigation tools if available.
  • Anticipates client needs and responds appropriately. Holds self responsible for service excellence.
  • Uses time efficiently and effectively. Reports to work as scheduled. Follows call‑in and approval procedures for time off. Requests leave in advance. Organizes and prioritizes work effectively.

Physical Requirements

Must frequently be able to move, transport, position, push/pull and/or lift objects or equipment weighing at least 50 pounds a distance of 450 feet. Ability to successfully deal with change and stressful situations. Must be able to safely push a person in a wheelchair ramp in various weather conditions. Must be able to transfer a person from a wheelchair to the toilet, chair, or van seat/car with use of a gait belt and/or manual or power Hoyer lift.

Visual Acuity

The worker is required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal.

Working Conditions

This position may work in a variety of indoor and outdoor work environments which may include various outdoor weather conditions, loud noises, and fluctuating temperatures and the occasional use of stairs. PSC operates from 6am to 6pm 5 days per week and requires flexibility to cover the needs of the business as it evolves and changes.
