Job Summary:

The Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) is accountable to the patient care team for providing direct patient care functions under the supervision of a registered nurse and performing clerical, communication, and other related duties to facilitate the efficient functioning of Department services. All duties are performed in collaboration with team members and according to standards outlined in the competency-based/evaluation tool. The CNA participates in and accepts responsibility for delegated functions and demonstrates a commitment to quality service for patients, the public, and co-workers.

Essential Functions & Responsibilities:

Assisting patients with daily activities:

• Performs range of motion exercises.
• Ambulates patients.
• Positions patients and provides skin care.
• Distributes linen and changes beds as needed.
• Assists with feeding and meal delivery.
• Assists with routine hygiene care, including toileting, incontinent care, oral, and personal hygiene.

Collecting patient data and specimens:

• Obtains urine, stool, and sputum specimens and processes them as needed.
• Records health data, weights, vital signs, pulse oximetry, pain assessments, and I&O.
• Communicates patient status and reports changes to licensed professionals.

Performing and explaining patient care procedures:

• Performs incentive spirometry.
• Transports patients and prepares them for diagnostic tests.
• Assists rehab therapists (PM & R).
• Performs pulse oximetry and oxygen setup in oxygen therapy.
• Prepares rooms and supplies, provides post-mortem care, and assists with admissions and discharges.
• Assists nurses in emergency situations.
• Maintains and cleans equipment.
• Performs oral and nasopharyngeal suctioning.
• Performs blood sugar finger sticks.
• Removes IV catheters under nurse supervision.
• Performs EKGs (department-specific).

Additional responsibilities include:

• Answering unit phones and directing calls.
• Data entry into electronic medical records and documentation of patient care.
• Patient registration activities.
• Coordinating equipment and supply needs, notifying departments of malfunctions.
• Performing other duties as assigned, including clerical and technical tasks.

Qualifications:

• High school diploma or GED required.
• CNA license issued by the Commonwealth of VA required.
• AHA BLS Provider CPR certification required at hire.
• For CNAs at Snowden at Fredericksburg: CPI certification is required within 90 days of hire.
