Job Description

The Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) will provide medical services at Mountain View Primary School to support students with Individual Education Plans (IEPs) as needed. The role requires working under the supervision of the classroom teacher and the school’s registered nurse to ensure the health and well‑being of the student(s) in the identified special education program.

Essential Functions

• Ride transportation for field trips to and from school with students.
• Implement and monitor seizure protocol.
• Implement and monitor tube feeding protocol.
• Assist staff with hygiene protocol including diapering and toileting.
• Assist staff with transferring students from equipment.
• Assist with alternative communication device protocol and implementation.
• Lift at least 50 pounds as required.
• Carry out instructional plans as designated by the special education teacher and the student’s IEP.
• Maintain student training data according to prescribed procedures.
• Undergo training in prescribed medical procedures for assigned student, including tube feeding, monitoring, and medication administration.
• Take and record vital signs at prescribed intervals and as warranted; monitor neurological and respiratory status and report to the special education teacher and nurse when rates are outside normal limits.
• Follow individual health care plans and respond to emergencies such as seizures and other medical emergencies.
• Assist with toileting, feeding, and positioning of students; perform hygiene and comfort functions.
• Prepare, clean, and maintain classroom, bathroom, and other areas for medical or sanitary duties.
• Assist with medical related duties (catheterization, gastrointestinal feedings, assistive breathing devices, colostomy and ileostomy needs) in the school setting and while transporting to and from school.
• Adhere to a daily schedule that regularly accounts for the student’s IEP.
• Carry out behavior management programs as appropriate under special education teacher supervision.
• Assist special education teacher in related instructional activities such as field trips, library, assembly, etc.
• Assist in physical movement of students from one learning environment to another.
• Perform clerical duties such as typing, filing, and copying when directed.
• Supervise and train students during free time and other non‑instructional periods as directed.
• Assist in maintaining special education students’ records.
• Assume additional duties as assigned by the teacher or administration.
• Participate in team meetings and assist with carry‑over of related services (Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, Speech, Adapted Physical Education, and Vision).

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Ability to develop and maintain an empathetic attitude toward disabled students; willingness to learn specialized instructional and management techniques; sound judgment; effective communication and relationship building with students, parents, and staff; basic computer and clerical skills; strict confidentiality.

Education and Experience

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to high‑school graduation; minimum one (1) year experience as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA); experience caring for children with special health needs preferred; holder of appropriate credentials as a CNA and certified in First Aid and CPR.

Physical Conditions and Nature of Work

Typical duties performed in school settings (classroom, gym, cafeteria, auditorium, recreational areas); frequent walking, standing, and lifting up to 80 pounds; occasional travel and use of mechanical devices; personal hygiene of disabled students; training and immunization against blood‑borne pathogens; occasional attendance to meetings beyond normal hours; daily close contact with students and staff.
