Responsibilities

The primary responsibility of a CNA is to ensure residents receive proper care through tasks such as:

  • Assisting residents with bathing, toileting, oral hygiene, skin care, grooming, nail care, and dressing
  • Feeding residents, providing bedside water, snacks, and transferring residents as needed, in accordance with nutritional plans
  • Responding promptly to resident call lights and assistance requests
  • Maintaining resident rooms by making beds, changing linens, cleaning bedside tables, and organizing belongings
  • Observing and reporting changes in residents' appetite, skin condition, or behaviors
  • Offering emotional support and active listening to foster trust and independence
  • Protecting resident confidentiality and privacy at all times
  • Documenting medical records, vitals, and assistance provided, following facility policies
  • Adhering to safety, infection control, and cleanliness standards

Qualifications

Minimum qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED, unless under a student permit
  • Certified by the Florida State Department of Health as a CNA in good standing; CNAs from other states may work for 120 days while awaiting Florida certification; graduating students may also work temporarily
  • Basic computer skills, including familiarity with Excel, Word, etc.
  • Understanding of safe and effective nursing practices within Florida
  • Interpersonal skills such as:
    • Assisting licensed nurses with procedures within the scope of practice
    • Following written and verbal instructions, working independently, and making decisions
    • Dealing tactfully with residents, families, visitors, and staff
    • Working harmoniously with team members
    • Prioritizing tasks according to standards and policies
    • Maintaining confidentiality and complying with HIPAA
    • Exhibiting patience, cheerfulness, and enthusiasm
    • Adhering to professional ethics
    • Communicating effectively about residents' conditions
