Primary Function
The Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) in the Emergency Department assists with a variety of nursing care tasks for patients of all ages under the supervision of the Nurse Supervisor. Responsibilities include supporting the nursing staff by implementing the established care plan, providing direct care to patients, and ensuring quality service in compliance with healthcare standards and protocols.
Responsibilities
Patient Care Duties
- Monitor and report abnormal findings related to vital signs, clinical symptoms, and lab results to the RN or provider.
- Assist patients with daily activities (bathing, oral hygiene, feeding, bed linen changes, etc.).
- Collect and handle specimens (urine, stool, sputum) and conduct finger-stick glucose monitoring.
- Record intake and output, monitor IVs, and document vital signs and other relevant data in the medical record.
- Initiate emergency resuscitative measures as needed and operate specialized medical equipment (e.g., suction pumps, oxygen equipment).
- Recognize and report malfunctioning or unsafe equipment and take corrective action.
Safety and Hygiene
- Maintain a safe environment by following Universal Precautions, Body Substance Isolation, and medical waste management protocols.
- Isolate infected patients and clean contact areas according to policy and OSHA guidelines.
- Advocate for patient rights and maintain confidentiality in all care-related activities.
Departmental and Interpersonal Support
- Rotate among various nursing departments, including outpatient and inpatient units, based on staffing needs and patient census.
- Assist with supply and equipment management to maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment.
- Adapt to fluctuating census and emergency situations, participating in cross-training as needed.
- Work under the supervision of the ER Nurse Manager or Team Leader, providing care per established procedures.
Quality Assurance
- Participate in ongoing nursing quality assurance programs.
- Observe, evaluate, and report on patient care and safety practices.
Job Knowledge
- Basic knowledge and skills in clinical nursing care, patient daily living assistance, and supporting medical examinations in the ER.
- Practical knowledge of treatment plans and procedures, such as dressing changes and specimen collection.
- Ability to recognize abnormal vital signs and report findings.
- Familiarity with medical facility procedures, including standard practices, medical records, and terminology.
Equipment Skills
- Proficient in using specialized medical equipment (suction pumps, oxygen units) and recognizing equipment abnormalities.
Education and Certification
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Certification as a Nursing Assistant (CNA) with successful completion of an accredited program.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required; Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) may be substituted.
- Valid North Carolina driver’s license required.
- Specialized CNA training preferred but not required.
- Six-week proficiency timeframe expected.
Contacts With Others
Frequent interaction with patients, families, hospital staff, and community agencies to provide patient care and coordinate activities. Professional, courteous conduct is required to maintain effective working relationships.
Confidential Data
Access to sensitive patient medical and personal data. Adherence to confidentiality guidelines mandated by the Privacy Act of 1974 is essential, with violations resulting in disciplinary actions.
Responsibility for Accuracy
The CNA is responsible for accuracy in carrying out care plans and procedures. Work affects patient health outcomes and is reviewed by a supervising RN or Team Leader.
Physical Requirements
- Requires considerable walking, standing, bending, and lifting of patients, equipment, and supplies, with frequent activities necessitating lifting over 15 pounds.
Work Environment
Moderate exposure to infectious diseases, chemicals, and electrical hazards. Compliance with safety guidelines is mandatory to minimize risk.
