POSITION INFORMATION: BASIC DETAILS

Full-Time/Part-Time: Full-Time (Seasonal)

FLSA Status:Non-Exempt

Pay Range:$22/hr. - $24/hr.

Pay is based on numerous factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.

POSITION SUMMARY INFORMATION: DUTIES AND REQUIREMENTS

This Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) plays a vital role in supporting hurricane response efforts in Florida by providing essential care and assistance to individuals affected by the disaster within a shelter setting. The Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) will be responsible for assisting Registered Nurses, Licensed Practical Nurses, and other healthcare professionals in providing for the basic needs of shelter residents.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Assist Registered Nurses and Licensed Practical Nurses in conducting patient assessments, including physical examinations and health history reviews, to determine their medical needs, with a focus on the common health issues encountered in a shelter environment.
  • Assist Registered Nurses and Licensed Practical Nurses in developing and implementing patient care plans based on assessment findings, in collaboration with other healthcare professionals and shelter staff.
  • Assist with the administration of medications, vaccines, and other treatments as prescribed by physicians or within established protocols, including managing medication administration for a large number of shelter residents, under the supervision of a Registered Nurse or Licensed Practical Nurse.
  • Provide basic wound care, including cleaning and dressing, with consideration for limited resources and potential environmental challenges in a shelter, under the supervision of a Registered Nurse or Licensed Practical Nurse.
  • Monitor patients' vital signs and overall condition, and report any changes or abnormalities to the appropriate medical personnel, including the ability to quickly identify and triage patients with urgent medical needs.
  • Perform basic life support (BLS) and other emergency medical interventions as needed, within the constraints of a shelter setting.
  • Assist in the operation of medical equipment, such as oxygen delivery systems, IV pumps, and cardiac monitors, safely and effectively, and ensure equipment is functional and available in the shelter.
  • Maintain accurate and detailed patient records, documenting assessments, interventions, and outcomes, using appropriate documentation methods for a shelter environment.
  • Educate patients and their families on health conditions, treatment plans, and self-care practices, with consideration for the diverse backgrounds and literacy levels of shelter residents.
  • Collaborate with physicians, paramedics, and other healthcare professionals as well as shelter staff and volunteers to coordinate patient care and ensure optimal outcomes.
  • Adhere to all infection control and safety protocols to prevent the spread of disease and maintain a safe environment within the shelter setting.
  • Provide compassionate and culturally sensitive care to patients and their families in a stressful and challenging environment, recognizing the emotional and psychological impact of displacement and trauma on shelter residents.
  • Perform other duties as assigned, within the scope of a Certified Nursing Assistant and the needs of the shelter.

Required Education, Certifications, Licenses, and Experience:

  • Must possess a valid Florida CNA license
  • Must possess a valid CPR/BLS card
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, including collaborating with non-medical shelter staff and volunteers.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with other staff, volunteers, and patients, including individuals with diverse backgrounds, limited English proficiency, and varying levels of health literacy.
  • Ability to maintain a positive attitude and work in a fast-paced environment, often with limited resources and in a high-stress shelter setting
  • Be prepared to deploy to disaster-affected areas, often with short notice.

Work Environment:

Employees may be exposed to extreme cold or hot weather conditions, fumes, or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and loud noise.

Physical Requirements:

Employees may be required to remain in a stationary position, stand, push, pull, climb, kneel, crawl, balance, squat, bend, and reach. Employees may be also required to use gear to move items around, including, but not limited to, carts and dollies. Employees may also be occasionally required to lift and/or move up to 49 pounds.
