Certified Nursing Assistant

The Department of Pediatrics at the University of Utah School of Medicine is seeking an experienced Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) to join our Ambulatory Clinical Care operation. The ambulatory group consists of 12 pediatric subspecialty divisions and service lines. This full‑time position (40 hours per week) provides patient care under the direction of a clinic manager and medical assistant supervisors. The CNA supplies assistive care to patients, facilitates efficient delivery of patient care, supports licensed staff and providers, assists with basic clinical tasks and clerical functions, and may participate in scribing duties as directed.

University of Utah pediatric clinic locations are primarily housed in Primary Children’s Hospital outpatient clinics in Salt Lake City and Lehi. Incumbents must be willing and able to commute to either location.

Responsibilities

Clinical Functions

1. Act as a medical scribe for assigned providers, documenting patient interactions and related clerical duties in the electronic health record system.
2. Prepare patients for examinations and diagnostic procedures according to clinic procedures, including recording vital signs and responses to standardized medical history questions.
3. Reinforce or assist in educating patients and families as delegated by the professional care provider.
4. Recognize and appropriately respond to emergency situations.
5. Report all observed patient concerns and changes in condition to a licensed staff member.
6. Perform CLIA Waived Lab tests as identified by the department and report results to the appropriate personnel.
7. Perform additional functions such as EKGs.
8. Act as a chaperone for health‑care providers during patient examinations as requested, and assist with procedures, treatments, and interventions.
9. Monitor and clean assigned patient examination rooms, unit areas, and equipment; restock medical supplies and report outdated supplies or equipment repairs.
10. Under the direction of licensed staff, schedule appointments, procedures, and diagnostic tests.
11. Assist in routine clerical functions such as filing of medical information in patient records, locating and compiling department charts, and obtaining medical records from other providers/offices.
12. Attend and complete mandatory education, including infection prevention and control, safety, CPR, equipment usage, and procedures according to hospital and department policies.
13. May assist with patient and family education by providing educational material and general health information.
14. May assist with transportation of patients to ancillary departments or inpatient units as directed by licensed staff.

Care Coordination

1. Schedule, coordinate, and monitor appointments, tests, and treatments/procedures.
2. Maintain medical records and other information; accurately document patient history, physical and vital information into the medical record.
3. Effectively use computer applications as needed in the office setting.

Comments

No physical restraint requirements. Worker must be able to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move up to 100 pounds while providing patient care. Exposure to infectious diseases may occur. Workers may be required to work around prisoners or behavioral health patients.

Minimum Qualifications

• Current RQI Healthcare Provider eCredential through the University of Utah Health RQI system, to be obtained within 30 days of hire.
• Current certification as a Nursing Assistant with the State of Utah, or completion of the first round of clinical and current enrollment in an approved nursing education program.
• For those enrolled in a nursing program, three months from completion of the RN program to obtain an RN license; if an RN license is not obtained by the end of those three months, the incumbent must immediately obtain a current CNA.
• Individuals with an RN license must also hold a CNA certification if remaining in this role for longer than three months.
• Must be immunized according to CDC standards and hospital policy; limited exemptions may be made for documented medical contraindications or religious beliefs that object to vaccinations.
