Job Summary:
Under the supervision of an Ob-Gyn Physician, manages the medical care of patients throughout the maternity cycle, including the antepartum, intrapartum, postpartum, and gynecological periods. Provides standard maternity care and counseling to expectant women following ambulatory care and inpatient standardized procedures, protocols, policies, and procedures regulated by the State of California Nurse Practice Act and Southern California Permanente Medical Group.
Essential Responsibilities:
- Manage the care of women during labor and delivery under the supervision of an Ob-Gyn physician.
- Obtain accurate medical, obstetrical, gynecological, and psycho-social histories of current pregnancies.
- Monitor signs of general and obstetrical health status.
- Perform complete physical examinations, including pap smears, breast exams, abdominal exams, pelvic exams, and clinical pelvimetry.
- Record findings, histories, and significant observations in patients' charts.
- Determine pregnancy status, presentation, fetal position, and fetal heart rate during gestation.
- Assess whether findings are within normal limits.
- Order appropriate laboratory tests such as chest X-ray, ultrasound, CBC, urinalysis, blood type, Rh factor, and serology tests.
- Consult with and obtain orders from obstetricians for special care or diagnostic procedures; refer to other services as needed.
- Implement preventative measures and detect abnormal conditions, seeking physician assistance when necessary.
- Educate, counsel, and guide patients regarding their health care.
- Identify the need for social services, genetics, or mental health services and refer appropriately.
- Evaluate patients' general and obstetrical health status.
- Provide health supervision, care, and family planning advice during antepartum and postpartum periods.
- Evaluate fetal status through abdominal palpation and ultrasound to estimate fetal weight, presentation, position, station, and fetal heart rate.
- Perform internal and external fetal monitoring and interpret results.
- Consult with obstetricians regarding questionable findings.
- Determine the stage of labor and admission status for labor and delivery.
- Conduct normal spontaneous vaginal deliveries independently.
- Assist in Cesarean sections and gynecological surgeries.
- Provide immediate care to newborns.
Basic Qualifications:
- Experience: N/A
- Education: Graduate of an accredited RN program. Graduate of a nurse midwifery program accredited by A.C.N.M. with BS, BSN, or BA; MS degree required by 2010.
- License, Certification, Registration: Certified Nurse Midwife (California), Registered Nurse License (California), National Provider Identifier, Nurse Midwife Certification from American Midwifery Certification Board, Neonatal Resuscitation Program.
Additional Requirements:
- For new grad CNMs, California Furnishing Number and DEA Registration Number must be obtained within 12 months of hire if applicable.
- BCLS certification required.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Three or more years of recent experience as a CNM preferred.
