Job Description

Under the supervision of an Ob-Gyn Physician, manages the medical care of patients throughout the maternity cycle, including antepartum, intrapartum, postpartum, and gynecological periods. Provides standard maternity care and counseling to expectant women, following ambulatory care and inpatient procedures, protocols, policies, and instructions regulated by the State of California Nurse Practice Act and Southern California Permanente Medical Group.

  1. Manage the care of women during labor and delivery under supervision.
  2. Obtain comprehensive medical, obstetrical, gynecological, and psycho-social histories.
  3. Monitor signs of general and obstetrical health status.
  4. Perform physical examinations, including pap smear, breast, abdominal, pelvic exams, and clinical pelvimetry.
  5. Document findings, histories, and observations in the patient's chart.
  6. Assess pregnancy status, fetal presentation, position, and fetal heart rate.
  7. Evaluate whether findings are within normal limits.
  8. Order laboratory tests such as X-rays, ultrasounds, CBC, urinalysis, blood type, Rh factor, and serology tests.
  9. Consult with obstetricians for special care or diagnostics and refer to other services as needed.
  10. Implement preventative measures and detect abnormal conditions, seeking physician assistance when necessary.
  11. Educate, counsel, and guide patients on their health care.
  12. Identify the need for social, genetics, or mental health services and refer appropriately.
  13. Evaluate overall and obstetrical health status.
  14. Provide health supervision, care, and family planning advice during antepartum and postpartum periods.
  15. Assess fetal status via abdominal palpation and ultrasound to estimate weight, presentation, position, station, and fetal heart rate.
  16. Perform and interpret internal and external fetal monitoring.
  17. Consult with obstetricians regarding questionable findings.
  18. Determine labor status and admission needs for labor and delivery.
  19. Conduct normal spontaneous vaginal deliveries independently.
  20. Assist in Cesarean sections and gynecological surgeries.
  21. Provide immediate newborn care.
Basic Qualifications

Experience: N/A

Education
  • Graduate of an accredited RN program.
  • Graduate of an A.C.N.M.-accredited nurse midwifery program with BS, BSN, or BA; MS degree required by 2010.
License, Certification, Registration
  • Certified Nurse Midwife (California)
  • Registered Nurse License (California)
  • National Provider Identifier
  • Nurse Midwife Certification from the American Midwifery Certification Board
Additional Requirements
  • If hiring a new graduate CNM, obtain California Furnishing Number and DEA Registration Number within 12 months of hire if applicable.
  • BCLS certification.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Three years of recent CNM experience preferred.

  • Coverage for OBGYN inpatient and outpatient duties as needed.
