Job description

Summary

At the Indian Health Service, Certified Nurse Midwives do more than practice medicine—they change lives. Guided by our mission to raise the health of American Indian and Alaska Native people, you'll deliver compassionate care where it’s needed most.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provides independent, preventative, therapeutic and comprehensive obstetric and gynecologic care. Collaborates with Obstetricians and Gynecologists.
  • Performs accurate history and physical examination on obstetric, gynecologic and neonatal patients.
  • Manages labor, including initial evaluation and hospital admission, ongoing assessment of maternal and fetal status, labor progress, need for intervention, and patient/family education and support.
  • Provides postpartum care using a family‑centered approach, evaluates and manages the normal postpartum period, determines hospital disposition, provides discharge counseling, and conducts clinic follow‑up.
Requirements
  • Proficiency in obstetric, gynecologic and neonatal care.
  • Ability to work independently and collaborate with other health professionals.
  • Valid nursing license and licensure to practice in the relevant jurisdiction.
  • Completion of a federal background investigation.
  • Compliance with E‑Verify and other federal employment verification procedures.
Qualifications

Education: A graduate or higher‑level degree in nursing or midwifery from an accredited institution. For foreign‑educated applicants, certification from the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools is required.

License: Passed the National Council Licensure Examination and current, active, unrestricted license as a professional nurse. Advanced Practice Nurse positions require licensure in the clinical specialty.

Experience: A minimum of one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level, including obstetric and gynecologic care, and management of pregnant patients.

Grade‑Level Requirements: For GS‑9, GS‑11, GS‑12, applicants must meet education, licensure and experience criteria outlined for the respective grade.

Additional Information

This position is subject to on‑call hours or standby duty, rotating shifts, and may require sign‑on bonuses and a 6‑month service agreement. A Real ID is required beginning May 7, 2025. The role also includes financial suitability review and may provide benefits such as annual leave accrual.
