Qualifications

  • Current, active, full, and unrestricted nursing license from a U.S. state, DC, Puerto Rico, or other U.S. territory.
  • Passed the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX).
  • At least one year of specialized experience at a grade level at or above the next lower federal level, in ER, OB, OR, or Med/Surg-Inpatient.

Responsibilities

  • Emergency Department duties: assess, plan, coordinate, implement and evaluate patient care; triage using ESI; provide comprehensive emergency care including stabilization and life-support.
  • Obstetrics duties: provide professional nursing care from labor through postpartum discharge; implement care plans across antepartum, intrapartum, postpartum, triage, and newborn care; maintain BLS/ACLS/NRP and fetal monitoring certifications.
  • Operating Room duties: assess patient condition; provide pre- and post-operative education; perform perioperative assessments; maintain ACLS/BLS/PALS; serve as primary scrub when needed.

Role Summary

At the Indian Health Service (IHS), nurses provide comprehensive patient care across multiple clinical settings, including the Emergency Department, Obstetrics/Labor and Delivery, Operating Room, and Med/Surg inpatient units. The role emphasizes compassionate, evidence‑based care to American Indian and Alaska Native patients.

Key Responsibilities
Emergency Department (ER) Duties
  • Assess, plan, coordinate, implement, and evaluate skilled patient care in line with nursing standards and evidence‑based practice.
  • Perform triage using the Emergency Severity Index (ESI) to determine acuity and prioritize treatment.
  • Provide comprehensive emergency care to stable, unstable, and critically ill patients, including stabilization, resuscitation, and life‑support interventions.
  • Use critical thinking to make complex clinical decisions and respond effectively to rapidly changing patient conditions.
Obstetrics (OB) Duties
  • Provide professional nursing care in the obstetrical unit for patients from labor and delivery through postpartum discharge and for newborns up to discharge.
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate individualized care plans across antepartum, intrapartum, postpartum, obstetrical triage, and newborn nursery services.
  • Maintain required certifications such as Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Life Support (ACLS), Neo‑Natal Resuscitation Program (NRP), and Fetal Monitoring.
Operating Room (OR) Duties
  • Assess patient condition based on observation, examination, interview, diagnosis, and laboratory data.
  • Provide pre‑ and post‑operative education and support, discuss procedures, recovery expectations, and self‑care with patients and families.
  • Perform pre‑, intra‑, and post‑operative assessments in PACU, Same‑Day Surgery, and Pre‑Admission units.
  • Maintain required certifications (ACLS, BLS, PALS) and demonstrate competency in advanced perioperative nursing skills.
  • Function as primary scrub technician when required, handling instruments, supplies, and equipment during surgical procedures.
Med/Surg‑Inpatient Duties
  • Coordinate care focused on patient education, self‑management, and overall satisfaction throughout inpatient care.
  • Administer medications and perform procedures per established policies and clinical standards.
  • Participate in performance improvement, patient safety, and quality initiatives to enhance clinical effectiveness.
Qualifications
  • Current, active, full, and unrestricted nurse license from a U.S. state, DC, Puerto Rico, or other U.S. territory.
  • Passed the National Council Licensure Examination.
  • At least one year of specialized experience at a grade level at or above the next lower federal level, in the private or public sector, in one of the following areas: ER, OB, OR, or Med/Surg‑Inpatient.
  • Experience must include performing duties listed under the respective specialty sections.
Educational Requirements
  • Graduate or higher‑level degree, bachelor’s, associate, or diploma from an accredited professional nursing program.
  • Foreign nursing graduates must provide official certification from the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools.
Background Investigation & Security

Successful completion of a federal background investigation is required. Applicants must complete all required background investigation forms promptly upon receipt to avoid processing delays.

Other Employment Conditions
  • U.S. citizenship required.
  • Selective Service registration required for males born after December 31, 1959.
  • Employment may involve rotating shifts, on‑call hours, and standby duties.
