Job Description:

The Medical Assistant in Oncology provides essential clinical and administrative support to the healthcare team. This role involves a combination of patient care, medical procedures, and administrative tasks, all performed within the specialized context of Hematology and Oncology.

Responsibilities:

Clinical Duties:

  • Prepare examination rooms for patient visits, ensuring necessary equipment and supplies are readily available
  • Assist patients in disrobing and draping appropriately for examinations
  • Obtain and record vital signs (temperature, blood pressure, pulse, respiration, height & weight) accurately
  • Record patient intake (past medical history, family & social history, surgical history, medication list, allergies, other problems and screening questions as set by provider)

Phlebotomy and Specimen Collection:

  • Perform venipuncture and capillary puncture to collect blood samples for lab testing
  • Collect and process other specimens, such as urine, stool, and bone marrow samples
  • Ensure proper labeling and handling of specimens

Basic Diagnostic Procedures:

  • Assist with electrocardiograms (ECGs), spirometry, and other diagnostic tests
  • Prepare patients for and assist with bone marrow biopsies and lumbar punctures

Administrative Duties:

  • Schedule patient appointments, including coordinating with other healthcare providers
  • Manage patient flow and ensure timely appointments
  • Reschedule appointments as needed

Medical Records:

  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date patient medical records
  • Prepare and file patient charts
  • Enter patient data into electronic health records (EHR)

Insurance Verification:

  • Verify patient insurance eligibility and benefits
  • Obtain pre-authorization for treatments and procedures
  • Coordinate with insurance companies for billing and reimbursement

Inventory Management:

  • Maintain adequate levels of medical supplies and equipment
  • Order and restock supplies as needed
  • Prepare and sterilize medical instruments

Requirements:

  • Minimum 2 years experience as Medical Assistant in health related field, oncology preferred
  • Medical Office Assistant certification required
  • High School diploma or Equivalency required
  • Working knowledge of MediSoft and PowerMed computer applications
