Job summary

Duke Primary Care Blue Ridge in Raleigh, NC is seeking a Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) to join our interdisciplinary health team. The CMA provides direct patient care, supports clinical operations, and helps ensure the clinic runs smoothly throughout the day.

Education and certification requirements include CMA programs with AAMA, AMT, NHA-CCMA, NCMA or ARMA credentials and BLS. Levels I–III describe escalating experience in a clinical setting, with 0–3 years typical by level.

Qualifications

• Graduation from accredited Medical Assistant program strongly preferred. High school or GED graduation required.
• Level II and Level III require certification by AAMA, AMT, NHA-CCMA, NCMA or ARMA and BLS.
• Advancement to Levels II/III requires meeting ladder criteria and demonstrated clinical competency.

Responsibilities

• Answer telephones
• Update and file patient medical records
• Fill out insurance forms
• Schedule appointments
• Arrange for hospital admissions
• Arrange for laboratory services
• Handle billing and bookkeeping
• Take medical histories and record vital signs
• Explain treatment procedures to patients
• Prepare patients for examinations and procedures
• Assist physician during examinations and procedures
• Collect and prepare laboratory specimens
• Perform basic laboratory tests
• Dispose of contaminated supplies and sterilize instruments
• Promote patient/family understanding of care plan and document in records
• Prepare and administer medications as directed by physician
• Authorize drug refills as directed
• Prepare patients for x-rays, tests and procedures
• Take electrocardiograms
• Remove sutures/staples
• Change dressings
