Job Description:
The Certified Medical Assistant I works alongside Physicians and Advanced Practice Providers to provide direct patient care according to state and federal guidelines. This position plays an important role in the ambulatory setting by performing clinical and administrative duties and helping patients feel at ease while understanding provider instructions.
Essential Responsibilities

- Provides direct patient care by taking vitals, patient history, venipuncture, lab, x-ray, referrals, and patient phone messages as directed by the provider and/or clinical supervisor.
- Adheres to National Patient Safety Goals as appropriate based on patient contact level.
- Assists in patient assessment and re-assessment.
- Monitors and documents patient status.
- Manages high call volume with excellent telephone etiquette.
- Organizes workflow to meet patient needs promptly.
- Retrieves and transports medications, instruments, and supplies as needed.
- Works with moderate exposure to hazards, including infections, blood, body fluids, electrical equipment, and chemicals, following standard precautions.
- Stocks exam rooms, maintains inventory, and orders supplies.
- Coordinates scheduling with healthcare professionals and facilities.
- Assists with procedures, maintaining sterile fields and proper specimen labeling.
- Gathers and documents patient information, including lab values, pain levels, education needs, nutritional status, and potential complications.
- Performs sterilization and disinfection of scopes, instruments, and equipment per manufacturer instructions.
- Participates in developing and evaluating patient care plans, including medication administration (excluding narcotics) as directed.
- Reinforces patient education on medications, post-surgical care, diets, and treatment changes.
- Transmits prescription refills as directed.
- Arranges hospital admissions and care services.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Requirements
CMA I:
Education: High School Diploma or GED required. Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant Program preferred.
Experience: 0-3 years in patient care preferred.
CMA II:
Education: Same as above.
Experience: 3-5 years in patient care required.
CMA III:
Education: Same as above.
Experience: 5+ years in patient care required.
License/Certification:
Basic Life Support (American Heart Association) certification required upon hire. Additionally, one of the following certifications is required:
- Medical Assistant - American Medical Technologists (AMT)
- Registered Medical Assistant - American Association of Medical Personnel
- Registered Medical Assistant - American Allied Health
- Certified Medical Assistant - American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA)
- Certified Clinical Medical Assistant - National Health Career Association
- National Certified Medical Assistant - NCCT
- Nationally Registered Certified Medical Assistant - National Association for Health Professionals
