Job Overview:

The Certified Medical Assistant performs routine clinical and clerical task under the direction of the program director/manager, physician or other health practitioner. Clinical duties may include taking and reporting vital signs, medical histories, preparing patients for examination, drawing blood, processing prescription refills and assist with minor procedures as directed by physician or health practitioner. Clerical duties may include answering office phones, making patient appointments, reviewing charge orders, in all hospital/physician financial systems. Is responsible for reporting identified safety issues such as hazardous environments (i.e. damaged floors/walls/ceiling tiles/unsecured areas) and medical errors, etc.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • High School diploma or equivalent. Role requires comprehension of medical terminology.
  • Medical Assistant Certification required or the ability and willingness to obtain certification from one of the following recognized organizations within 60 days of hire: NHA, NCCT, AMT, AAMA, NCMA, AMCA, NAHP. Job title will reflect Medical Assistant and will convert to Certified Medical Assistant upon proof of certification.
  • At least 6 months of relevant experience and/or training or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • BLS Certification approved by AHA, required
  • Role requires comprehension of medical terminology.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills essential
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment
  • Ability to multitask, prioritize and work under pressure
  • Knowledge of electronic medical record (EMR) systems, preferred

Scheduling Requirements:

  • Shifts Monday - Friday, 8am-4:30pm
  • Full-Time

Essential Functions:

  • Adapts to varying work requirements dependent on the unit s needs. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
  • Answers phones/intercoms in a courteous and timely manner, screens calls and refers messages appropriately.
  • Assists in the flow of department work processes by running errands to other departments as requested.
  • Communicates with insurance providers and handles pre-authorizations and certifications as necessary.
  • Communicates with patients and other providers per the instruction of the overseeing physician or health practitioner.
  • Electronically transmits prescriptions refills as directed by the Physician or APN.
  • Maintains accurate and strict confidentiality of patient information in electronic and/or manual systems as established by the appropriate protocols, regulations, and policies.
  • Maintains supplies by inventorying stock, placing orders and verifying receipt.
  • Performs duties to support the nursing.
  • Prepares rooms, arranges instruments and equipment, and maintains quality, safety and/or infection standards.
  • Performs routine specialized procedures, such as venipuncture/phlebotomy.
  • Responsible for preparing patients and assisting physicians during examinations.
  • Rooms patients, verifies patient information, confirms purpose of visit, obtains and records vital signs, height and weight, allergens, medical history, medication dosage and frequency.
  • Supports department needs with clerical tasks such as answering phones, scheduling appointments, verifying insurance, preparing lab requests, and other clerical tasks as assigned
