Duke Nursing Highlights:
The team at the PreOp/Pre-Anesthesia Testing Clinic is responsible for assessing patients’ readiness for surgery that requires anesthesia. Our team of anesthesiologists, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, medical assistants, and nurses evaluate outpatients scheduled for various surgeries or procedures, including elective, non-elective, and semi-urgent procedures.
Job Summary:
The Medical Assistant, Certified functions as an integral member of the interdisciplinary healthcare team, providing direct patient care. The Medical Assistant, Certified performs routine administrative and patient care supportive duties in a Health System medical practice, assisting medical and nursing staff in patient examinations and treatments, ensuring smooth clinic operations.
Shift: 7a-3p or 8a-4p, Monday-Friday, No weekends or holidays
Duties and Responsibilities:
Clinical responsibilities: The CMA takes medical histories, records vital signs, explains treatment procedures, and prepares patients for examinations and procedures. They assist during examinations, collect laboratory specimens, perform basic tests, take electrocardiograms, remove sutures/staples, change dressings, promote patient understanding, and document in patient records. They also handle instrument sterilization, telephoning prescriptions, administering medications, and other delegated clinical tasks.
Administrative responsibilities: The CMA greets patients, answers phones, schedules appointments, manages referrals, updates records, handles billing, and orders supplies. They may also serve as a liaison for clinic activities and participate in committees.
Qualifications:
Education: High school diploma or GED required; graduation from an accredited Medical Assistant program preferred.
Experience: Varies by level, from none to 3+ years of clinical experience.
Certifications: Certification by AAMA, AMT, NHA-CCMA, NCMA, or ARMA required depending on level; BLS required.
Skills: Good customer service, ability to follow instructions, basic medical knowledge, sterile techniques, patient treatment procedures, infection control, effective communication, teamwork, typing skills, knowledge of medical terminology.
