Job description

Job Summary

Geisinger offers outpatient Certified Medical Assistants a $3,000 bonus for eligible candidates. Geisinger has hundreds of community sites that allow Certified Medical Assistants to work to the top of their certification while providing top-notch care in an ambulatory setting.

Job Duties
  1. Provides direct patient care and clinical support for physicians and other providers in the outpatient setting.
  2. Functions as an integral member of the health care team under the direction of the provider.
  3. Performs clinical duties such as preparing patients, collecting and reviewing pertinent information, performing technical duties, documenting using the electronic medical record, and supporting a safe environment for patients.
  4. Provides administrative and clerical support for the clinic/department including patient scheduling, filing reports, and following up on documentation, phone calls, and billing inquiries.
  5. Obtains and documents, using the rooming tool in the electronic medical record, the patient's reason for visit, weight, vital signs, visit screening information, medication review, and pertinent information for provider.
  6. Sets up examination and treatment rooms between cases.
  7. Assists patients as needed to prepare for visits with providers, taking appropriate measures to ensure patient safety and privacy.
  8. Provides direct patient care as directed by the provider based on competency and clinic needs, such as performing EKGs, wound dressings, and supporting minor surgical procedures and examinations.
  9. Prepares and administers medications according to policy and procedure after validation of knowledge and demonstration of competency. May not administer intravenous medications.
  10. Completes patient tests and treatments per provider’s order according to policy and procedure after validation of knowledge and demonstration of competency.
  11. Collects and prepares laboratory specimens and completes associated paperwork accurately and efficiently to expedite laboratory studies.
  12. Performs phlebotomy and may assist in specific laboratory functions related to testing, reporting, and quality assurance of laboratory specimens as overseen by the laboratory.
  13. Performs receptionist and clerical duties to support patient care and clinic functioning, including matching and filing reports in patients' medical records.
  14. Documents thoroughly in the electronic medical record to ensure a complete and accurate medical record.
  15. Uses designated electronic medical record and scheduling systems.
  16. Facilitates timely patient appointments, completes referrals and pre-authorizations as needed, and collects co-payments.
  17. Assists with orientation of new personnel under the direction of the provider and/or site lead.
  18. Manages ongoing patient communication, prioritizes messages to the provider, responds to patient questions, and ensures efficient and timely responses.
  19. Reinforces patient education as directed by the provider to support understanding of instructions.
  20. May inventory medical/surgical supplies and pharmaceuticals, verify expiration dates, and document utilization to ensure adequate supply levels.
  21. May access non-controlled medication storage areas and transport medications as necessary.
  22. Prepares and cleans instruments, follows sterilization protocols, and maintains infection prevention standards.
  23. Prepares examination rooms between patients, ensuring cleanliness and infection control.
  24. Inspects diagnostic equipment for proper operation and reports maintenance needs.
  25. Participates actively in patient safety and quality improvement initiatives.

Work is typically performed in a clinical environment. Travel may be required. All job obligations and policies must be satisfied and followed. This profile reflects typical job elements necessary for successful performance; additional department-specific competencies may apply.

Position Details

Hiring Incentive: $3,000 sign-on bonus paid over two years, with stipulations.

Position Requirements: Graduate of an accredited 1-year certificate or 2-year diploma Medical Assistant program preferred. Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) or Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) required. Certification by NHA, AMT, AAMA, NAHP, NCCT, AAH, or AMCA required.
