Job Summary

The Certified Medical Assistant 1 assists in the delivery of health care for patients under the direction of a physician. This position performs a wide variety of patient care activities, including maintaining clinical records and documentation, administering medications, giving injections, and taking vital signs.

Essential Functions
  • Assist in examination and treatment of patients under physician direction.
  • Prepare treatment rooms for examination; clean rooms after procedures, disinfect equipment, and restock supplies.
  • Accompany patients from the waiting room and prepare them for examination.
  • Interview patients and record or input information into the medical record; collect all medical data to facilitate the physician’s ability to draw conclusions about the patient’s needs; ensure all charts and forms for the office visit are ready for the provider.
  • Measure and record patient vital signs (pulse, temperature, blood pressure, weight, height) and prepare patients for examinations, tests, procedures, and x‑rays.
  • Perform routine patient testing, acquire and process electrocardiograms, and collect blood specimens and urine samples.
  • Prepare and administer routine oral and rectal medications, injections, and vaccinations excluding controlled substances, as directed by the physician; identify and report adverse reactions.
  • Remove sutures and staples and change sterile and non‑sterile dressings, as requested.
Key Success Factors
  • Medical assistant certification from a program accredited by the American Association of Medical Assistants or the American Medical Technologists.
  • Knowledge of principles of safe and accurate medical administration.
  • Knowledge of the 5 rights: right patient, right medication, right dose, right route, right time.
  • Ability to accurately document patient information in accordance with organizational policies, regulations and procedures; familiarity with HIPAA regulations.
  • Ability to observe patient’s general physical condition and notify nurse or healthcare provider of abnormalities.
  • Ability to give injections and draw blood.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Excellent bedside manner and ability to put patients at ease; appears friendly, reassuring and approachable.
  • Ability to take instruction from a physician.
  • Familiarity with medical charts and records.
  • High attention to detail.

Qualifications
  • Education: H.S. Diploma/GED Equivalent
  • Experience: Less than 1 Year of Experience
  • Certification/License/Registration:
    • BLS: BLS or BLS within 30 days of hire or transfer.
    • Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) from a listed credentialing body.
    • National Certified Medical Assistant (NCMA) from NCCT.
    • Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) from AAMA or ARMA.
    • Certified Clean Medical Assistant (CCMA) from NHA.
    • Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) from AMT, AAMP or AAH.
    • National Registered Certified Medical Assistant (NRCMA) from NAHP.
    • Clean Medical Assistant Certified (CMAC) from AMCA.
