ANCC Magnet designated UPMC Passavant is currently hiring a Full-Time Lead Surgical Technologist to support our Operating Room at the McCandless location. Salary will be determined based upon experience.

Shift Details:

  • Monday - Friday
  • Four 10 hr. shifts or two 12 hr. shifts and two 8 hr. shifts
  • On-call one holiday per year

Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate day-to-day supervision of the surgical technicians. Serve as the Lead on daily shifts to resolve/answer any questions or issues.
  • Teach both skill and theoretical principles to new employees and students.
  • Assist the Nurse Specialist in supervising the use of supplies and equipment for patient care and safety in all procedures.
  • Ensure all medications are labeled and handed to surgeon according to established policies and procedures.
  • Assist in scheduling procedures under the case scheduling process.
  • Demonstrate initiative in problem solving related to patient and technical issues to improve OR function and operation.
  • Liaise with Sterile Processing.
  • Modify/revise requisitions (surgeon's preference cards) as needed.
  • Present one in-service training to staff annually under the direction of the Clinician.
  • Maintain a clean, safe environment, adhering to safety and aseptic techniques.
  • Have Epro access and ability to order specialty items.
  • Serve as a resource to staff members.
  • Assist head nurse by precepting students and new employees.
  • During surgery, pass instruments and supplies efficiently to surgeons and assistants.
  • Assist with retractors, sutures, sponges, and instrument counts during surgery.
  • Help transfer patients to the recovery room post-surgery.
  • Clean and restock the operating room.
  • Prepare patients for surgery, including washing, shaving, and ensuring aseptic sites.
  • Transport and position patients as needed, covering with sterile drapes.
  • Support cost containment efforts.
  • Assist with gowning and gloving procedures.
  • Handle specimens for laboratory analysis and apply dressings.
  • Set up surgical instruments and equipment before procedures.
  • Assemble and check equipment to ensure proper functioning.
  • Facilitate surgical tech education and participate in peer review.
