St. Francis Medical Center in Los Angeles is seeking a Certified Lactation Educator to provide education and support to breastfeeding mothers in the hospital setting.

You will promote breastfeeding, assist with hand expression, pumping and breastmilk storage, and coordinate referrals to WIC; EMR documentation and group support.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Spanish speaking preferred.
  • CLE certificate specialized in breastfeeding required.
  • One to two years previous hospital experience preferred.
  • Experience using computers for consultation documentation.
  • Customer-centric verbal and writing skills.

Responsibilities

  • Provide individualized education and support to breastfeeding mothers.
  • Promote breastfeeding and assist with facilitating change within the clinical settings using evidence-based care management.
  • Educate all mothers separated from their infants, e.g., premature infants to initiate hand expression and pumping, collection and storage of breastmilk within 6 hours after birth.
  • Refer WIC participant mothers and place referrals for those needing an electric breast pump for home use.
  • Enter information and consults into the hospital EMR system.
  • Participate in breastfeeding support groups for inpatient new mothers.
  • Lead Maternity Tours and discuss skin-to-skin and breastfeeding.
  • Assist with data collection and follow-up post-discharge calls as needed; restock supplies.

Responsibilities

The Certified Lactation Educator will provide individualized education and support to breastfeeding mothers. The CLE promotes breastfeeding and assists with facilitating change within the clinical settings using evidence-based care management. The CLE educates all mothers who are separated from their infants, e.g., premature infants to initiate hand expression and pumping, collection and storage of breastmilk immediately but within 6 hours after birth. The CLE will refer the WIC participant mothers to WIC and place referrals for those mothers that will need an electric breast pump for home use. The CLE will accurately enter information and consults into the hospital Electronic Medical Record system. The CLE will also participate and facilitate the breastfeeding support groups offered to all inpatient newly delivered mothers. The CLE will participate in the Maternity Tours and events and be available to lead a discussion about skin-to-skin and breastfeeding. In addition to the broad range of breastfeeding education provided to patients, the CLE will assist with collection of data and assist with follow/up post-discharge phone calls when as needed and restock supplies as needed.

  • High School Graduate or equivalent

  • Spanish speaking preferred

  • CLE certificate specialized in breast feeding required.

  • One to two years previous experience in hospital setting preferred

  • Experience using computers for consultation documentation.

  • Customer-centric verbal and writing skills

A reasonable compensation estimate for this role, which includes estimated wages, benefits, and other forms of compensation, is $23.00 to $26.22. The exact starting compensation to be offered will be determined at the time of selecting an applicant for hire, in which a wide range of factors will be considered, including but not limited to, skillset, years of applicable experience, education, credentials and licensure.
