Job summary

The University Medical Center of El Paso is seeking a Certified Laboratory Assistant to join the Specimen Department. This role collects patient specimens, performs venipuncture and capillary punctures, and prepares samples for analysis.

You will handle incoming requests by phone or inquiry, enter test orders into the Laboratory System from paper requisitions, and perform waived testing as needed. Part-time night shift available.

Qualifications

• At least 1 year of phlebotomy experience.
• High School diploma or equivalent.
• Phlebotomist or Medical Assistant certificate required.

Responsibilities

• Collects patient specimens and performs venipuncture and capillary punctures.
• Processes and labels specimens for analysis.
• Enters test orders into the Laboratory System from requisitions.
• Handles telephone requests and provides collection instructions.

The Certified Laboratory Assistant collects patient specimens, performs venous and capillary punctures, processes specimens for analysis. Handles telephone request or inquiries, provides instructions to clients and patients regarding specimen collection. Enters test orders from paper requisitions into the Laboratory System. Performs waived testing as requested.

Required Skills:

• Basic knowledge in the use of computers.
• Knowledge of circulatory system and blood composition.
• Knowledge and ability to understand medical terminology.
• Ability to apply venipuncture and capillary techniques proficiently.
• Knowledge of processes related to handling, transporting and processing laboratory specimens.
• Knowledge and processes associated with waived testing.
• Knowledge of blood and non-blood specimen collection processes.
• Ability to adhere to safety, quality assurance/control and regulatory applications.
• Effective oral and written communication skills.
