Job description

Overview

To help children and their families better understand the illness, hospitalization and outpatient procedures. Decreasing stress and anxiety related to procedures, separation from home and family and changes in routine are the key focus areas.

Responsibilities

Assessment - Promotes the use of evidence-based practice using protocols and procedures.

  • Observe and assess the needs and concerns of the child and family
  • Develop an individualized plan of care using a collaborative approach with the patient/family and health care team.
  • Use appropriate interventions identified in the plan of care to achieve expected patient outcomes.
  • Systematically evaluate and document patient's progress toward expected outcomes/goals.
  • Modify plan of care based on evaluation.
  • Complete required documentation as appropriate, including patient chart and event reports.
  • Demonstrate professional accountability for own practice as evidenced through seeking resources and continuing self-development.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of equipment and maintain current knowledge and skills in evidence-based practices.

Intervention - Participates in the interdisciplinary care of the patient with the collaboration of team members, utilizing additional resources as needed.

  • Analyze clinical situations systematically and act to obtain resources or correct problems to meet or exceed expected outcomes or patient needs.
  • Demonstrate ownership and persistence to ensure problems are resolved in the best way possible.
  • Consistently prioritize work based on changes in patient condition, changes in assignment, and unanticipated interruptions.
  • Identify and utilize team resources to solve identified problems or needs.
  • Collaborate with the health care team in organizing tasks and activities for the patient's care from admission to discharge according to the plan of care and to meet identified expected outcomes.
  • Work with other team members in delegating tasks and activities appropriately.
  • Advocate with physicians on patient's behalf when necessary.
  • Utilize communication and teamwork strategies aimed at promoting high team performance and achieving optimal patient outcomes and unit productivity.
  • Choose an appropriate and meaningful communication style when interacting with others.

Education - Assesses and chooses teaching strategies appropriate to the patient's age and family needs.

  • Adapt teaching strategies based on patient's response, readiness to learn, and level of comprehension.
  • Consider cultural, age-specific, gender, and developmental factors when teaching patients about procedures, illness, hospital experience, etc.
  • Ensure patient safety in the hospital environment by following policy/procedures and adhering to National Patient Safety Goals.
  • Consult appropriate resources within the hospital to provide specialized education.
  • Utilize SVI patient education system as a resource for patients and family members.
  • Promote the professional development of self and team members.
  • Share clinical knowledge through formal and informal teaching and in response to the learning needs of others.

Performance Improvement - Actively participates in data collection, analysis, problem-solving and gives input on process improvements and patient satisfaction.

  • Work with the interdisciplinary team in identifying opportunities for improvement in patient care and patient/family satisfaction.
  • Actively promote and achieve customer satisfaction (patient, family, departments, physicians).
  • Participate in the implementation of Performance Improvement initiatives.
  • Promptly and efficiently follow up on patient/family requests/needs - anticipate patient/family needs.
  • Encourage coworkers in achieving excellent customer satisfaction; utilize organizational service excellence standards.
  • Serve on unit-based councils as needed.
  • Identify practice problems on the unit.
  • Implement changes in own clinical practice based on literature and unit process improvement outcomes.
  • Work on assigned projects, data collection, audits as assigned.
Qualifications

License/Certifications: Certified Child Life Specialist (CCLS) within 1 year - Association of Child Life Professionals (ACLP) AND Basic Life Support (BLS) within 30 days - American Heart Association (AHA)

Education: Bachelor's Degree: Child Development including the 10 required courses as outlined by Association of Child Life Professionals OR Bachelor's Degree: Related Field including the 10 required courses as outlined by Association of Child Life Professionals. Successful completion of a 600 hour child life internship.

Other Knowledge/Skills: Writes, reads, comprehends and speaks fluent English. Basic computer knowledge using word processing, spreadsheet, email, and web browser. Multicultural sensitivity. Critical thinking skills using independent judgment in making decisions.

Salary Range

The compensation range for this position is $19.71 per hour - $31.93 per hour. This represents a good faith minimum and maximum range for the role at the time of posting by Carle Health. The actual compensation offered to a candidate will be dependent on a variety of factors including, but not limited to, the candidate’s experience, qualifications, location, training, licenses, shifts worked and compensation model.
