The athletic trainer is responsible for the treatment of athletes of all ages, abilities, and sports. This includes prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation of physical injuries, as well as addressing emotional and mental aspects of injuries. The role involves treating sprains, strains, contusions, abrasions, lacerations, dislocations, chronic injuries, and fractures. The trainer will measure, examine, analyze, and instruct to evaluate physical fitness components and promote health and injury prevention.
Additional duties include establishing communication with athletic directors, school staff, coaches, parents, and medical professionals; developing and organizing rehabilitation programs; coordinating sports medicine coverage, physical screenings, injury clinics, and managing the training room and supplies. The trainer must be knowledgeable of practice standards and regulations governing athletic training in school and outpatient settings.
The role requires demonstrating critical thinking for safe, quality care; providing excellent customer service; ensuring safety; effective communication; collaboration with healthcare teams; adherence to policies and standards; and maintaining confidentiality. The trainer also assists with daily operations and data collection within the strength and conditioning program.
