Job description

The Cert Pharmacy Tech II assists pharmacists in providing pharmaceutical care services to patients by helping in the preparation, dispensing, record keeping, and transporting medications for all age groups, including neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients.

Under minimal supervision, the Cert Pharmacy Tech II performs the duties of a Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) II proficiently, demonstrating exemplary work behaviors and ownership of their responsibilities.

The CPhT II handles all tasks of a CPhT I, with added responsibilities in medication coordination, compounding, and packaging.

Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for Hire:
  • Current certification by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) OR valid ExCPT certification from the National Healthcareer Association.
  • Current licensure with the Virginia State Board of Pharmacy.
  • No felony or drug-related convictions; no restrictions or suspensions of pharmacy licensure.
For Continued Employment:
  • Maintain current PTCB or ExCPT certification and Virginia licensure.
Experience:
  • Required: One year of pharmacy practice experience.
  • Preferred: Two years of pharmacy practice, including medication compounding (sterile and non-sterile), and experience with keyboard typing at 20-30 WPM.
Education/Training:
  • Required: High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Preferred: CSPT certification, PTCB assessment-based certificates like Technician Product Verification, Hazardous Drug Management, Billing and Reimbursement.
Independent Actions:
  • Demonstrate competency in CPhT I responsibilities.
  • Maintain and compound medications according to USP standards.
  • Repackage medications into unit doses, support pharmacy technology, and serve as backup to CPhT III during weekends.
  • Train team members and perform some CPhT III duties after mastery assessment.
Additional Requirements:
  • Availability for all shifts, including weekends, holidays, and emergencies.
  • Physical activities include lifting 20-50 lbs., standing, sitting, bending, climbing, reaching, and repetitive motions.
  • Requires strong recall, reasoning, problem-solving, clear speech, legible writing, reading, and adaptability to a fast-paced, noisy environment with frequent changes.
