Job summary

Sylvania in Washington State is seeking a dedicated School Bus Driver to join the Transportation team. The role involves operating school buses on scheduled routes and high standards of safety, with training leading to CDL endorsement and necessary clearances.

The driver will perform daily inspections, maintain accurate records, and communicate effectively with students, staff and families. This is an on-call position requiring flexibility.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 21 years of age.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • CDL with school bus endorsements and non-air brake restriction; WA license.
  • Clean driving record with limited minor violations.
  • Ability to pass federal physical exam.
  • Evidence of School Bus Driver's Authorization, Criminal Justice Fingerprint Clearance, Drug Testing Clearance, First Aid Certification.
  • Ability to meet physical and mental demands and communicate effectively.

Responsibilities

  • Drives all sizes and types of school buses in various conditions.
  • Performs daily pre-trip and post-trip inspections.
  • Transports students on scheduled routes and extracurricular trips per WA OSPI policies.
  • Maintains safety and defensive driving practices.
  • Completes transportation paperwork accurately and communicates clearly.
  • Collaborates with district staff, parents and students to ensure safety and efficiency.

Job Summary:

The district offers a 60-hour paid training program for anyone who is interested in getting their commercial driver’s license (CDL), including passenger, school bus endorsements and non-air brake restriction. The rate of pay for the training program is $17.13 per hour.

Required Qualifications:
  • Minimum of 21 years of age
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Minimum of five (5) years of driving experience
  • WA State driver’s license, with commercial driver’s license (CDL), including passenger, school bus endorsements and non-air brake restriction
  • Clean driving abstract free of all major violations such as DUI or negligent driving with a limited number of minor violations
  • Ability to pass a physical examination as required under federal regulations
  • Evidence of School Bus Driver's Authorization, Criminal Justice Fingerprint Clearance, Drug Testing Clearance, First Aid Certification
  • Ability to meet the physical and mental demands necessary to perform duties, tasks and responsibilities of a school bus driver as described in the job description
  • Ability to communicate effectively, possess awareness of self and others, listen actively, be patient, incorporate humor/lightheartedness into work, be empathic, possess a growth mindset and be customer service oriented

Preferred Qualifications/Eventual Competency:
  • Must be able to perform multiple non-technical tasks with a potential need to upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions
  • Specific skill-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job including; adhering to safety practices; understanding applicable codes, policies, regulations and maintaining accurate records, knowledge of area streets and locations, emergency evacuation techniques, health standards and hazards
Essential Job Functions:
  • Drives all size and types of school buses in any type of traffic and weather condition, including fog, rain, snow and traffic congestion
  • Performs daily pre-trip and post-trip inspections to ensure any vehicle driven is in safe operating condition and complying with mandated guidelines
  • Drives school bus in accordance with the laws established by the WA State Department of Licensing as well as the policies established by the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction for the purpose of transporting students on scheduled routes to and from school as well as extracurricular activity trips
  • Concentrate on safety and defensive driving under various distracting circumstances
  • Communicate effectively using verbal, listening and writing skills. Including attention to detail and ability to accurately complete transportation/driver paperwork
  • Team oriented; ability to work with a variety of people including sensitivity to cultural, developmental, socioeconomic, religious and ethnic diversity of students, staff and community
  • Strong student management capabilities
  • Ability to establish rapport with students, colleagues, administrators, parents and community stakeholders
  • Reports observations and/or incidents (discipline, accidents, inappropriate behavior) in accordance with school district policies and procedures
  • Advises students and other passengers of appropriate behavior for the purpose of reinforcing established guideline and maintaining passenger safety
  • Demonstrate a high degree of professionalism and ethics, working cooperatively with program management, administrators, certificated and non-certificated staff, parents and students
  • Work cooperatively to support a successful team effort
  • Work collaboratively and respectfully with other team members and District staff
  • Possess clear communication skills, conflict management and resolution skills, fallibility, diplomacy, flexibility, patience, awareness (of self and others), and trustworthiness
  • Conducts emergency evacuation drills inn accordance with OSPI policies
  • Other duties as assigned
Salary:

$27.98 per hour for drivers who meet the training and license requirements.

Work schedule:

This is an on-call position. Hours and days will vary depending upon need.
