Job summary

A healthcare organization in Providence is seeking a Patient Transporter to assist in transporting patients and materials throughout the hospital. Job description

SUMMARY

Under general supervision and according to established procedures, transports patients, mail, medical records, laboratory specimens, equipment and patient related materials to all areas within the hospital complex. Operates service elevators and maintains transport vehicles according to procedure.

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Transport patients by wheelchair or stretcher to areas within the hospital complex as assigned by the dispatcher or according to the needs of the assigned area; transfer patients to and from transport vehicles with direction and/or assistance from nursing personnel.
• Collect laboratory specimens, medical records, x‑rays, lab reports, prescriptions and medications not governed by special controls, and distribute them to appropriate areas; transport special or starter materials as assigned.
• Move equipment on wheels and/or other moderately heavy items such as hospital beds, carts, cardiac monitors and supplies.
• Collect mail and interdepartmental correspondence from the mailroom and other departments, and distribute them as assigned.
• Operate service elevators used for transportation of patients, equipment and supplies.
• Prepare transport vehicles for patient use by changing linen, replacing IV poles, etc., and return them to appropriate areas.
• Maintain a written log of all assignments, recording department, items or patients transported and times of initiation and completion for presentation to supervisor at the end of the shift.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• Basic knowledge: level of education normally attained in secondary school courses; verbal skills to understand English instructions and writing skills to maintain a daily log; visual acuity to check name bracelets, envelopes, etc. for proper delivery; demonstrated knowledge and skills necessary to provide care to patients with consideration of aging processes, human development stages, and cultural patterns.
• Experience: two to four weeks of on‑job training.

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

• Exposure to patient environment with standard precautions as directed by nursing personnel when transporting barrier patients.
• Subject to seasonal variations in temperature; occasional exposure to unpleasant weather conditions when transporting patients or materials to areas not accessible by tunnels.
• Occasional exposure to unpleasant odors when transporting specimens.
• Physical ability to stand and walk almost continuously, and to lift, carry and push patients and moderately heavy materials.
• Visual acuity to check name bracelets, envelopes, etc. for proper delivery.
