Job summary

77 consultants is seeking a Central Sterile Processing Technician to join our sterile processing team in a military facility setting. You will inspect, decontaminate, assemble, label, and package instruments according to established protocols.

This role requires a CST certificate with completion of a formal CST training course, at least one year of hands-on CST experience, and current BLS certification. A government background check may be required.

Qualifications

• Certificate in Central Sterile Processing is required.
• Completion of a recognized central sterile supply training course.
• Minimum of one year of hands-on CST experience post-certification.
• Current certification from the International Association of Healthcare Central Services Materials Management or the National Institute of Healthcare Sterile Processing and Distribution Personnel.
• Must have a current American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross (ARC) Basic Life Support Healthcare Provider certification.
• Ability to successfully pass a Government background check/security clearance, as required for the role.

Responsibilities

• Receive, disassemble, and inspect reusable medical devices and surgical instruments for damages.
• Manage reception and disposal of regulated medical waste, general waste, and soiled linen per health and safety standards.
• Adhere to OSHA regulations regarding PPE in the decontamination area.
• Assess and apply decontamination methods for blood, tissue fragments and other contaminants using wiping, soaking, rinsing, scrubbing, ultrasonic and washer-decontamination equipment.
• Conduct post-decontamination and pre-sterilization checks to ensure removal of contaminants and proper instrument functionality.
• Ensure all medical devices and instruments are labeled and identified for tracking and safety.
• Assemble trays and instrument sets; select wrapping materials and determine sterilization methods per MTF protocols (ETO and Steam); ensure items are wrapped, sealed, and aerated as required.
• Inspect sterilized trays and equipment after cycle for integrity and indicators; stock sterile items in the dedicated storage area according to MTF procedures.

Job description

Responsibilities and Duties:

• Receive, disassemble, and conduct thorough inspections of reusable medical devices and surgical instrumentation to identify any damages.
• Manage the reception and disposal of regulated medical waste, general waste, and soiled linen in compliance with relevant health and safety standards.
• Adhere to OSHA regulations regarding the mandatory use of personal protective equipment (PPE) while operating in the decontamination area.
• Assess and implement the appropriate decontamination methods for the removal of blood, tissue fragments, bodily fluids, and other significant contaminants. This includes techniques such as wiping, soaking, rinsing, scrubbing, and utilizing ultrasonic and washer-decontamination/sterilization equipment.
• Conduct post-decontamination and pre-sterilization examinations to ensure the complete removal of gross contaminants and confirm the proper functionality of instruments.
• Ensure that all medical devices and surgical instruments are accurately labeled and identified for tracking and safety purposes.
• Assemble and prepare a comprehensive range of specialty trays and instrument sets. Select the appropriate wrapping or packaging materials for these sets, and determine the necessary sterilization methods in accordance with standard Military Treatment Facility (MTF) protocols—including Ethylene Oxide (ETO) and Steam Sterilization. Ensure items are adequately labeled, sealed, wrapped, or placed in appropriate rigid containers and that gas-sterilized items are aerated for the mandated duration.
• Receive and inspect sterilized trays, sets, and equipment after their cycle to verify the integrity of sterilization. This includes checks for color changes on indicator tapes, assessment of external and internal indicators, and evaluation of package dampness. Properly stock and store sterile items according to MTF procedures within the dedicated sterile storage area.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Degree: Certificate in Central Sterile Processing.
• Education: Completion of a recognized central sterile supply training course.
• Experience: A minimum of one year of hands-on experience as a central sterile supply technician post-certification.
• Certification: Hold current certification from either the International Association of Healthcare Central Services Materials Management or the National Institute of Healthcare Sterile Processing and Distribution Personnel.
• Life Support Certification: Must have a current American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross (ARC) Basic Life Support (BLS) Healthcare Provider certification.
• Security Clearance: Ability to successfully pass a Government background check/security clearance, as required for the role.
