Job summary

The University of Michigan's Central Sterile Reprocessing Department (CSPD) Manager oversees administrative and operational goals for CSPD at the Troy Center for Specialty Care. Central Sterile Reprocessing Dept Manager

TheCentral Sterile ReprocessingDepartment (CSPD) Manager isresponsible for the administrativeand operational goals and objectives of the CSPD department atMichigan Medicine's Troy Center for Specialty Care. Thisposition plans, organizes anddirects theoperations oftheCentral Sterile Processing Department inaccordance withFederal, State andLocal standards, regulations andMichigan Medicineguidelines, procedures andpolicies that govern decontamination,sterilization anddistr ibution ofinstrumentationrequired forthe Surgical Services department, procedural areas and clinics. The CSPD managerworks in collaborationwith AmbulatoryCare and OR leaders, nursing/patientcare leaders, support services, faculty, and staffto manage the re-processing and availability of instrumentation

Responsibilities*

Leadership and Organizational Development:

  • Focusing on strategic planning; work with CSPD Director and/or Senior Director for Enterprise Disinfection & Sterilization Services for CSPD to identify unit priorities, support business efficiencies, and enhance a culture of teamwork and cooperation among staff members.
  • Develop and promote innovative approaches for team development and cohesiveness throughout all levels of business operations to meet operational and business needs.
  • Identify, communicate, share, and present operational, performance, financial metrics, and best practices to staff, and leadership.
  • Builds and inspires confidence, trust and collaboration through an atmosphere of cooperation with all internal and external partners and customers to ensure timely processing, sterilization and distribution of instrumentation.

Supervision and Staff Management:

  • Manages and oversees the reprocessing of instruments for Surgical Services and units outside the Operating Room (OR) environment (units, clinics, diagnostic areas, etc.).
  • Responsible for staff human resource management, onboarding, performance planning and development, coaching, and discipline.
  • Responsible for ensuring that all sterile processing policies/procedures are current and practiced consistently.
  • Develop and oversee procedures to recognize and encourage staff excellence.
  • Over sees educational programs for staff and leadership development.
  • Over sees and ensures compliance and training for the Instrument Tracking System.
  • Assures all storage areas and supplies are maintained in a neat, orderly, safe and clean environment.
  • Assures the environment of care is clean, compliant with standards and has required air flow and air exchanges.
  • Assigns other tasks to staff members and performs other tasks as the need dictates.

Compliance, Safety and Quality Programs:

  • Responsible for compliance with accreditation and regulatory requirements concerning the reprocessing of instrumentation.
  • Over sees and ensures the selection of the appropriate processing method used for each sterilized item is compliant with manufacturer's instructions for use (IFU).
  • Responsible for the development and monitoring of all process improvement and quality indicators and managing these indicators to a high-performance level.
  • Reviews and monitors Patient Safety Reporting Forms and other quality reports to ensure safe practices are in place and being followed.
  • Maintains and fosters compliance with productivity and first-time quality indicators and criteria.
  • Is responsible for the preparation and publishing of monthly statistical activity reports.
  • Prepare regular reports for SOS committee and other committees as needed.
  • Ensures proper collection and storage of all associated records for bacteriologic testing, cycle monitoring, and preventative maintenance.

Financial Responsibility and Fiscal Oversight:

  • Responsible for sound fiscal management of the unit including managing to or exceeding forecast targets.
  • Oversees capital and operational budgets.
  • Assured unit and supervisory staffing models are reviewed and adjusted accordingly.
  • Follows and maintains standard work practices, to ensure the work environment is conducive to a high level of productivity, safety and efficiency.
Required Qualifications*
  • Bachelor's degree in a healthcare-related field such as Administration, Business, Education, Nursing, Sciences, or a related discipline; equivalent relevant work experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience working in a Central Sterile Processing and/or Surgical Services department, including at least three (3) years in a supervisory or management role.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of aseptic practices, surgical instrumentation, patient care equipment, sterilization, and decontamination processes.
  • Certification through an accredited Sterile Processing Organization such as CBSPD or HSPA
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and other computer-based software applications.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with strong critical-thinking and customer service abilities.
  • Demonstrated experience developing and implementing process improvement strategies and quality initiatives.
  • Subject matter expertise in medical device reprocessing, including surgical instruments, supplies, equipment, sterilizers, sterilization modalities, and high-level disinfection; extensive knowledge of medical instrumentation and associated procedures.
  • Proven ability to build effective working relationships and collaborate across departments, with the ability to interact professionally and negotiate successfully with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills with the ability to guide, mentor, and hold teams accountable to established standards, policies, and regulatory requirements.
  • Demonstrated experience with accreditation readiness and regulatory compliance, including Joint Commission, CMS, AAMI, OSHA, and state regulatory agencies.
  • Proven success leading departmental transformation initiatives, such as workflow redesign, staffing optimization, or technology adoption
Desired Qualifications*
  • Sterile Processing Leadership certification (e.g., HSPA SPD Management Certification or equivalent).
  • Previous experience working in the Operating Room or a comparable perioperative or procedural setting.
  • Experience managing capital equipment planning, budgeting, and vendor relationships.
  • Lean, Six Sigma, or formal performance improvement training or certification.
  • Experience mentoring leaders, succession planning, and building high-performing teams in complex healthcare environments.
Modes of Work

Work Schedule

Full time, M-F, weekends as needed. Hours are typically "day shift" however, may flex based on unit needs.
