The primary function of the Central Sterile Instrument Tech is to perform the decontamination, preparation, sterilization, and distribution of surgical instruments and medical equipment throughout the surgical services department and ancillary departments as needed. He/She works under the supervision of a Registered Nurse to provide safe patient care using aseptic techniques in assisting the surgical team before, during, and after surgery.
The Central Sterile Instrument Tech at Bayou Bend Health System works in sterile supply where he/she prepares, tracks, and sterilizes equipment and instruments in an accurate and timely manner. Prepares operating room sterile trays and assists operating room staff in pulling supplies per physician preference card as warranted by census.
ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS:
- The Central Sterile Instrument Tech reports to the Surgical Services Director.
- In the absence of a Surgical Services Director, the Central Sterile Instrument Tech reports to the Charge Nurse or designee.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES:- Perform the decontamination, preparation, sterilization, and distribution of surgical instruments and medical equipment throughout the surgical services department and ancillary departments as needed per AAMI guidelines.
- Participate in maintaining a safe and clean environment.
- Monitor Air Flow, Temp and Humidity, Eye Wash Stations, Sterilizers, Endoscopic Scope Cleaner, Blanket/Fluid Warmers, and Washer Disinfector.
- Perform Performance Improvement monitoring and provide documentation to the Surgical Services manager.
- Inspect equipment, instruments, and packaging for cleanliness, defects, and/or malfunctions.
- Perform quality control through routine testing and cleaning to assure sterilization equipment and instruments are functioning properly.
- Decontaminate, restock, and assemble surgical trays.
- Assemble trays, basin sets, packages, instruments, and equipment and prepare items for sterilization.
- Clean, repackage, and sterilize instruments according to manufacturer’s instructions for use.
- Sort, load, unload, and decontaminate equipment and instruments according to manufacturer’s instructions for use. Maintain instructions for use manual in accordance with AAMI guidelines.
- Collect dirty equipment and instruments.
- Display knowledge of decontamination, packaging, and sterilization of instrumentation and supplies.
- Demonstrate knowledge of supplies available to the unit.
- Follow through with appropriate disposition of equipment used.
- Display appropriate skill in the use and maintenance of assigned equipment.
- Demonstrate knowledge of the use and care of equipment.
- Assist with maintaining cleanliness of the work environment.
- Follow appropriate infection control policies and procedures.
- Assist in performing and documenting environmental checks as required by administrative and OR policies and regulatory agencies.
EDUCATION/QUALIFICATIONS/EXPERIENCE:- Certification in Sterile Processing preferred; non-certified are required to get certification within one year of start date.
- At least one year of Sterile Processing experience required.
