Job summary

The Cancer & Hematology Centers is seeking a lab technician with phlebotomy experience to join our Central Laboratory team in Grand Rapids. Monday–Friday, day shift; no weekends or holidays.

You will handle specimen intake, registration in LIS, routing to specialties, maintain safety and specimen integrity, and support providers during procedures while delivering compassionate patient care.

Responsibilities

• Assist Central Laboratory specialty departments (blood bank, flow cytometry and molecular) on duties as needed.
• Manage inbound specimens from the clinic sites, thoroughly sorting the coolers, checking manifests, and releasing specimens into the Central Laboratory.
• Register external patients directly into the laboratory information system and keeping the laboratory information system uniform, organized and up to date.
• Answer the lab phone and Daily Lab Safety Communication chat and assist callers with their questions and requests.
• Assist the medical technologists to find and account for specimens and pending logs.
• Assist the medical technologists to unpack inventory shipments.
• Assist the providers during bone marrow biopsies.
• Provide phlebotomy duties as needed.
• Maintain lab supply inventory and complete order forms for needed supplies.
• Complete tasks as laboratory leadership deems appropriate.

Able to perform a variety of tasks including but not limited to specimen ordering, collecting, processing and packaging for send out testing. Able to interact with peers and other departments in a manner that is viewed as having a positive effect on patient services and CHC staff morale. Interacts effectively with patients and family members demonstrating sensitivity in regard to cultural diversity, age specific needs, confidentiality and all abilities.

Functions as a team member by expanding responsibilities as directed by management to facilitate optimal workflow within the cancer center.

Job Requirements:
