Job summary

Gresham Smith in Chattanooga, TN is seeking a CEI Inspector to observe highway construction, prepare daily reports, and ensure work meets plans and contract documents. You will coordinate with contractors and client personnel, maintain logs, review submittals, and assist with RFIs.

A high school diploma and 1 year of construction/inspection experience or a 2–4 year engineering program are required; TDOT CEI certifications and EPSC Training Level 1/2 are strongly preferred.

Qualifications

  • Experience on TDOT or municipal roadway projects with daily records/reports preferred.
  • TDOT CEI certifications and EPSC training (Level 1/2) preferred; may train post-hire.
  • Familiarity with TDOT specs and ability to use inspection tools.

Responsibilities

  • Observe and inspect construction work and prepare daily reports and constructability reviews.
  • Oversee daily construction activities including earthwork, erosion control, reinforced concrete, and equipment installation.
  • Review plans and moderate complexity shop drawings for compliance with specifications.
  • Maintain daily job logs and report deviations to management promptly.
  • Coordinate with contractors and client personnel regarding inspection activities, RFIs, and submittals.

About You

We're looking for someone who has:

  • A high school diploma (GED) and a minimum of 1 year of construction or inspection experience on roadway projects, or completion of a 2- or 4-year engineering technology or engineering program
  • Preferably experience on TDOT or municipal roadway projects requiring daily records and reports on asphalt paving, concrete work, grading, structural work, and erosion control
  • Licenses/registrations/certifications such as TDOT CEI certifications are a plus; may be required to participate in certification and training courses post-hire including OSHA, TDOT, or client-specific required training
  • Strongly preferred completion of Level 1, and preferably Level 2, of the state's Erosion Prevention and Sediment Control (EPSC) Training Program
  • Familiarity with construction techniques, design principles, TDOT specifications, and documents
  • Ability or willingness to learn the use of tools and equipment such as air meters, slump cones, transit levels, and tape measures
  • Competence in computer use for data entry and reporting
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work independently
  • Effective listening and communication skills, both verbal and written, including good English language knowledge, grammar, composition, and spelling
  • Physical ability to frequently sit, use hands to operate tools or equipment, talk, see, hear, reach with hands and arms, walk, stand, and stoop; frequently lift or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally more-reasonable accommodations may be made to support individuals with disabilities

About the Role

As aCEI Inspector, you will:

  • Observe and inspect construction work and prepare daily inspection reports and constructability reviews
  • Oversee daily construction activities including earthwork, erosion control, reinforced concrete, and equipment installation
  • Ensure construction progress aligns with specifications and contract documents by reviewing plans and analyzing moderate complexity shop drawings
  • Maintain daily job logs and report deviations from plans to management promptly
  • Participate in reviewing submittals, assisting with Requests for Information (RFIs), and other related tasks
  • Coordinate with contractors, client personnel, and other stakeholders regarding inspection activities
  • Advise contractors on non-compliance or contract violations and collaborate on corrective actions
  • Verify that highway work zones and traffic control setups meet contract requirements
  • Assist in contractor evaluations and perform other duties as assigned
  • Use or learn necessary inspection tools and computer systems for accurate data collection and reporting
