Job summary

Bowman Consulting Group, Ltd. is seeking a CEI Inspector I to join our Columbia, SC team. Assist in daily inspections of roadway projects and learn complex inspection processes under supervision.

You will observe, document, and communicate findings, contribute to project records, and help ensure adherence to specs and safety requirements. This entry-level role supports growth within a collaborative, field-focused environment.

Qualifications

• High school diploma (GED) required. Engineering program completion preferred; commensurate experience considered.
• Entry level position, no prior experience required. Any construction/inspection experience on roadway projects preferred.
• DOT CEI Certifications are a plus. May be required to participate in certification/training courses post-hire.

Purpose

Assist in performing and tracking daily inspection of construction work on a variety of roadway projects.

Responsibilities

Leadership and Direction

• Perform work under direct supervision of an experienced professional and follow established procedures and clearly defined processes. Receive direction on all aspects of assignments, specific tasks and how to execute. Work is thoroughly reviewed by more senior staff to ensure application of sound techniques and principles.

At the Operational and Company Level

• Assist in the maintenance of existing client relationships.

Do the Work

• Observe and inspect construction work and prepare daily inspection reports and constructability reviews.
• Oversee daily construction work including work zone traffic control, earthwork, erosion control, asphalt paving, concrete paving, drainage structure installation, reinforced concrete, and equipment installation.
• Observe construction work in progress to ensure performance with specifications and contract documents. Review coordinated sets of working drawings.
• Complete daily calculating, reporting, documenting, and communicating verbally and in writing.
• Compute quantities for items such as concrete, asphalt, steel, earthwork, drainage structures, and traffic control devices.
• Operate company vehicle, computer, and testing equipment.
• Analyze shop drawings of moderate complexity.
• Maintain daily job log.
• Refer and report problems and deviations from plans and specifications to management. Take part in reviewing submittals, assisting with RFI\'s, and other related activities.
• May give some direction to contractors and act as field engineer representative and owner\'s representative regarding problem solving and field changes.

Qualifications

• High school diploma (GED) required. Engineering program completion preferred; commensurate experience considered.
• Entry level position, no prior experience required. Any construction/inspection experience on roadway projects preferred.
• Experience on DOT or municipal roadway projects including daily records and reports on asphalt paving, concrete work, grading, structural work, and erosions control preferred.
• DOT CEI Certifications are a plus. May be required to participate in certification and training courses post-hire as required by OSHA, DOT, or client-specific requirements (i.e. concrete, asphalt certifications, erosion control, and safety training).
• Current state CEPSCI (Certified Erosion Prevention & Sediment Control Inspector) registration strongly preferred.
• Introductory knowledge of road and bridge construction techniques, design, DOT specifications and documents, standard operations, policies and procedures of a firm, preferably within the A/E industry preferred.
• Familiarity with or the ability to learn how to use tools and equipment such as air meter, slump cone, transit, level, and tape measure preferred.
• Possession of or ability to obtain the following certifications within 12 months:
• • SCDES Certified Erosion Prevention and Sediment Control Inspector (CEPSCI)
  • SCDOT Nuclear Guage Hazardous Materials
  • SCDOT Earthwork, Drainage and Base
  • American Concrete Institute (ACI) Concrete Field Testing Technician – Grade 1
  • SCDOT Asphalt Roadway Technician
  • SCDOT Concrete Technician – Field Inspection Level 1 and 2)
