Job summary

ATCS Construction Services in North Carolina is expanding its Asheville team and seeks motivated Construction Inspectors to support statewide transportation infrastructure projects. The ideal candidate has 1–2 years of inspection experience and knowledge of NCDOT practices; certifications are preferred but candidates willing to obtain them will be considered.

The role offers a competitive pay range ($17–$45 per hour), overtime eligibility, and a target 2% annual bonus.

Qualifications

  • Valid driver's license.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction plans, specifications, standards, and contract documents.
  • Working knowledge of mathematics, including algebra, geometry, and trigonometry.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor contractor operations to ensure quality control and compliance with project plans, specifications, standards, and contract requirements for roadway, bridge, structure, and transportation construction projects.
  • Inspect roadway, bridge, utility, and maintenance construction activities to verify compliance with contract documents and NCDOT requirements.
  • Review, interpret, and enforce construction plans, specifications, and contract documents.
  • Prepare accurate and thorough project documentation, including daily reports, quantity calculations, field measurements, and inspection records.
  • Compute daily pay quantities and assist with preparation of field adjustment estimates.
  • Communicate construction issues, schedule concerns, and potential contract conflicts to project management and assist in resolving field challenges.
  • Conduct materials testing and sampling in accordance with NCDOT requirements and applicable testing procedures.
  • Verify compliance with work zone traffic control requirements, environmental permits, erosion and sediment control measures, and project safety standards.
  • Coordinate with contractors, project teams, and agency representatives to ensure successful project delivery.

ATCS's Construction Services group is expanding in Asheville, North Carolina!

We are seeking motivated Construction Inspectors to support transportation infrastructure projects across the state. We are particularly interested in candidates with at least 1-2 years of construction inspection experience and knowledge of NCDOT construction practices and standards.

Key Responsibilities

Qualifications
Required
  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Basic computer skills, including Microsoft Office, email, web-based applications, and tablets/iPads.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction plans, specifications, standards, and contract documents.
  • Working knowledge of mathematics, including algebra, geometry, and trigonometry.
Preferred
  • 1-2 years of construction inspection experience, preferably on roadway, bridge, utility, or transportation-related projects.
  • Candidates with less direct inspection experience may be considered if they have relevant construction experience and a strong interest in transportation construction inspection.
  • Associate's Degree in Civil Engineering Technology or a related field preferred.
  • Knowledge of surveying methods, construction materials, and equipment used in highway and transportation construction.
  • Experience working on NCDOT projects.
  • Possession of one or more NCDOT certifications is highly desirable.
Preferred NCDOT Certifications

Candidates possessing one or more of the following certifications are strongly encouraged to apply:

  • QMS Roadway (Asphalt)
  • Concrete Field Technician
  • Conventional Density
  • ABC Sampling
  • Erosion & Sediment Control
  • Work Zone Traffic Control
  • Nuclear Gauge Safety

Candidates who do not currently hold these certifications but are willing and able to obtain them may also be considered. ATCS may provide training and support for qualified candidates pursuing required certifications.

Our employees are the most critical part of ATCS. For this position, we offer a competitive salary range of $17 to $45 per hour, commensurate with experience and qualifications. The role is also eligible for overtime and an annual bonus, with a target 2% of the employee's annualized salary.
