Job summary

ATCS is expanding its Construction Services group in Asheville, North Carolina, seeking motivated Construction Inspectors. We value candidates with 1–2 years of inspection experience and knowledge of NCDOT practices, with certifications preferred.

You will work on roadway, bridge, and transportation projects across the state. We offer training for required certifications, a competitive hourly rate, overtime eligibility, and an annual bonus of 2% of the salary.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Strong reading and interpretation of construction plans and specs.
  • Proficiency in basic mathematics and algebra is expected.
  • Basic computer skills including MS Office and tablets/iPads.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor contractor operations for quality and compliance with plans, specs, and standards.
  • Inspect roadway, bridge, utility, and related construction activities for contract compliance.
  • Review and enforce construction plans and contract documents.
  • Prepare daily reports, quantities, field measurements, and inspection records.
  • Compute daily pay quantities and assist with field adjustment estimates.
  • Communicate issues and schedule concerns to project management and help resolve field challenges.
  • Conduct materials testing per NCDOT requirements and testing procedures.
  • Ensure compliance with work zone traffic control, permits, erosion controls, and safety standards.
  • Coordinate with contractors and project teams to support successful delivery.

ATCS's Construction Services group is expanding in Asheville, North Carolina!

We are seeking motivated Construction Inspectors to support transportation infrastructure projects across the state. We are particularly interested in candidates with at least 1-2 years of construction inspection experience and knowledge of NCDOT construction practices and standards.

Key Responsibilities
  • Monitor contractor operations to ensure quality control and compliance with project plans, specifications, standards, and contract requirements for roadway, bridge, structure, and transportation construction projects.
  • Inspect roadway, bridge, utility, and maintenance construction activities to verify compliance with contract documents and NCDOT requirements.
  • Review, interpret, and enforce construction plans, specifications, and contract documents.
  • Prepare accurate and thorough project documentation, including daily reports, quantity calculations, field measurements, and inspection records.
  • Compute daily pay quantities and assist with preparation of field adjustment estimates.
  • Communicate construction issues, schedule concerns, and potential contract conflicts to project management and assist in resolving field challenges.
  • Conduct materials testing and sampling in accordance with NCDOT requirements and applicable testing procedures.
  • Verify compliance with work zone traffic control requirements, environmental permits, erosion and sediment control measures, and project safety standards.
  • Coordinate with contractors, project teams, and agency representatives to ensure successful project delivery.
Qualifications
Required
  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Basic computer skills, including Microsoft Office, email, web-based applications, and tablets/iPads.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction plans, specifications, standards, and contract documents.
  • Working knowledge of mathematics, including algebra, geometry, and trigonometry.
Preferred
  • 1-2 years of construction inspection experience, preferably on roadway, bridge, utility, or transportation-related projects.
  • Candidates with less direct inspection experience may be considered if they have relevant construction experience and a strong interest in transportation construction inspection.
  • Associate's Degree in Civil Engineering Technology or a related field preferred.
  • Knowledge of surveying methods, construction materials, and equipment used in highway and transportation construction.
  • Experience working on NCDOT projects.
  • Possession of one or more NCDOT certifications is highly desirable.
Preferred NCDOT Certifications

Candidates possessing one or more of the following certifications are strongly encouraged to apply:

  • Concrete Field Technician
  • ABC Sampling
  • Work Zone Traffic Control

Candidates who do not currently hold these certificates but are willing and able to obtain them may also be considered. ATCS may provide training and support for qualified candidates pursuing required certifications.

Our employees are the most critical part of ATCS. For this position, we offer a competitive salary range of $17 to $45 per hour, commensurate with experience and qualifications. The role is also eligible for overtime and an annual bonus, with a target 2% of the employee's annualized salary.
