Remote Status: On‑Site

Inspector (Entry – Junior Level) – North Charleston, SC

Construction Engineering & Inspection – Infrastructure Consulting & Engineering, LLC (ICE) is a full‑service transportation design and consulting firm. Join our team to work on civil and transportation engineering projects and improve infrastructure in the Lowcountry.

Responsibilities
  • Provide daily observation of construction activities and document activities on required reports/forms.
  • Review construction materials for contract and specification compliance.
  • Inspect roadways and structures for conformance to plans and specifications.
  • Evaluate structural materials, placement of culverts, and structural operations such as foundation excavation.
  • Monitor placement of pilings, reinforcing and structural steel, concrete, and backfill.
  • Verify lines, grades, dimensions, and elevations using survey and field engineering equipment.
  • Perform accurate calculations and computations.
  • Sample and test construction materials to ensure they meet the quality requirements of the project specifications.
  • Review contractor submittals for conformance to project documents and specifications.
  • Document and immediately report any non‑compliance actions and safety violations to your immediate supervisor.
  • Record Daily Work Reports to include quantities in Site Manager and for American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) projects.
Qualifications
  • Above average math and problem‑solving skills.
  • Ability to adapt to new technologies and quickly learn new computer skills.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills in English.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States.
  • Must have a current driver’s license with a safe driving record; ICE is a drug‑free workplace.
Education and Experience Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Associate or Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering is a plus.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs.
Certifications and Training Requirements

The following certifications help ensure that CEI technicians comply with SCDOT, AASHTO, and ASTM standards for transportation infrastructure projects. ICE provides training to obtain these certifications and supports professional growth.

  • Entry‑Level – Junior Inspector: A minimum of one year of inspection experience desired (not required).
  • Preferred but not required certifications:
    • SCDOT Asphalt Roadway Technician
    • SCDOT Earthwork Drainage & Base Technician
    • SCDOT Concrete Level 1 and Level 2
    • ACI Concrete Field Testing Technician – Grade 1
Physical Demands

Requires minimal lifting up to 50 pounds, sometimes frequently. Must be able to travel and tour work sites under adverse environmental conditions, including loud noise, high dust, extreme temperatures, uneven terrain, highway traffic, and heavy equipment. Must be able to visually examine construction materials and finished structures in various weather and field conditions, including heights.

Expected Hours of Work

This is a full‑time position (40 hours per week). Office hours are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, with a one‑hour unpaid lunch. Overtime may be required occasionally and will be compensated at time and a half. Some night and weekend work may be required based on project demands.
