Position Overview

Responsibilities
  1. 40% - Foster an effective learning environment; establish and adapt learning objectives; provide instruction, counseling, discipline, supervision; evaluate student performance and progress.
  2. 15% - Use appropriate instructional methods and materials; implement curriculum objectives; attend in-service training for professional growth.
  3. 10% - Establish classroom policies; provide guidance and discipline; make referrals for assistance.
  4. 5% - Communicate with students, parents, guardians, specialists, and staff; maintain positive relationships; provide guidance and evaluation.
  5. 10% - Set classroom goals; evaluate and record student progress; prepare reports.
  6. 5% - Direct activities of non-certificated personnel; oversee students' physical, emotional, behavioral, medical, and hygienic needs.
  7. 10% - Collect, interpret, and evaluate data; develop and amend individual education plans (IEPs); provide reports.
  8. 5% - Attend staff meetings and activities for objectives and professional development.
Other Functions
  • Participate in staff committees and activities to enhance skills.
  • Perform related tasks within scope and responsibilities.
  • Attend annual Special Education Compliance Professional Development days.
Reporting Relationships

Reports to the building Principal.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of subject areas, behavior management, instructional techniques, student safety rules, and special education regulations. Proficiency in communication, lesson planning, curriculum adaptation, and positive behavior support. Ability to positively engage with a diverse student population, manage behavior, adapt to change, organize activities, and maintain a safe learning environment. Ability to use equipment and software, direct staff, and in some cases, provide first aid, CPR, or use non-verbal communication methods.

Working Conditions

Handle diverse student behaviors and disabilities; manage multiple tasks; deal with interruptions; sometimes work with distressed students; potential exposure to infectious diseases and bodily fluids; physical stamina required for demonstrations and movements; may need to lift or restrain students; teach in environments with limited communication tools.

Education and Experience

Bachelor's degree; experience or preparation in teaching diverse student populations in urban settings; experience in reading instruction, curriculum adaptation, and behavior management programs. Additional qualifications may include bilingual education, dropout prevention, and multi-level teaching.

Licenses and Requirements

Valid Washington State Teaching Certificate with Special Education Endorsement; some positions require First Aid and CPR certification; some may require a valid Washington State driver's license or Class II license.
