This Correctional Support Trades Supervisor I (CSTS I) is a Grounds Maintenance Supervisor at a Colorado Department of Corrections (CDOC) prison facility, located in Canon City, CO. Primary responsibilities include but are not limited to: ensuring the safety and security of the general public, staff and inmates; training and overseeing an inmate work crew in grounds maintenance operations and ensuring the safe, efficient, and compliant completion of assigned tasks. This position promotes the CDOC Mission and Vision with integrity and commitment.
Position ensures the safe, efficient, compliant, and cost effective completion of grounds maintenance for facility complex.
Position maintains safety and security of facility and work sites; through clear and accurate verbal communication, trains and guides staff and inmates in the proper use of controlled items, keys, tools, equipment, and chemicals; enforces security procedures by conducting regular work site searches, strip searches and inmate shakedowns; monitors workplace environment and inmate behavior, paying close attention to changes, inappropriate activity or potential problems; initiates verbal reprimands when required and, if necessary, physically controls inmates through proper application of restraints or use of force techniques; monitors, supervises and escorts inmates according to facility policy; conducts shakedowns of work sites; responds to emergency situations such as fights, fires, and escapes according to agency policy. Through conscientious observation, clear communications and adherence to agency Administrative Regulations, facility Implementation Adjustments and the Code of Penal Discipline, position promotes a safe and secure environment. Position may be required to work additional hours or shifts in order to maintain security or operational viability.
Position provides supervision of assigned inmate workers; promotes a high level of performance by setting the work standard according to agency mission, vision and values. Trains and instructs assigned inmates in the inspection, repair and maintenance of the grounds throughout the facility complex and the appropriate use of all relevant tools, equipment, and procedures to ensure efficient, safe, and effective completion of assigned tasks; stresses safe work practices and the proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for self, staff, and inmates; exemplifies a professional workforce that embodies honesty, integrity, and ethical behavior.
Participates in inmate hiring process in order to ensure appropriate placement on crews and training needs; tracks and calculates inmate hours and pay, creates schedule and assigns tasks, inspects work and performs inmate evaluations and resolves inmate grievances; reduces inmate idleness and creates real life work opportunities to prepare inmates for community reentry. Position may be required to supervise other inmate crews/workers in the absence of assigned supervisor.
Position oversees inspection, repair, and maintenance of the grounds throughout facility complex, to include comprehensive lawn-care, landscape projects, irrigation design, installation, and repairs, concrete work, asphalt patching, and snow removal.
Position may supervise an inmate work crew on projects for other agencies/organizations at locations outside of the BV Correctional Complex; and could be assigned sole supervision and transport of an inmate crew to locations within the community or to remote sites. These assignments may require a great deal of walking and hiking, land navigation or orienteering skills, and operating vehicles off highway in rugged terrain and/or driving vehicles while pulling trailers.
This position is subject to: facility call back, working additional hours or shifts to maintain security and operations, working outside during inclement weather, working in close proximity to industrial equipment, and in high, tight and confined spaces.

Four (4) years of employment experience in residential or commercial grounds maintenance, including preventive, predictive and corrective maintenance of automated irrigation systems and/or comprehensive lawn care/landscaping and other exterior work such as concrete work, asphalt patching, fence building, and snow removal.

Applicant may meet the four (4) year requirement with a combination of work experience: at least two (2) years of employment experience as described above, possibly combined with correctional experience involving security duties such as detaining, controlling inmate movement, conducting counts and searches, and monitoring inmate activities. Successful completion of a formalized apprenticeship program or degree through an accredited vocational or trade school that demonstrates competencies equivalent to those learned through the required experience may substitute on a year-for-year basis. Attach transcripts if using this substitution.
