Overview
The Residential Driver is responsible for safely, efficiently, and courteously providing waste removal services to customers. The driver collects solid waste or recyclables on curbside and/or backdoor routes and transports to post-collection facilities.
Responsibilities
- Operate a residential / recycling collection, side-load and/or rear-load truck, ancillary equipment and hydraulic system to collect solid waste and/or recyclables on the specified collection route.
- Load solid waste, yard waste and/or recyclables into the rear or side of the waste collection vehicle.
- Operate equipment on the truck to compact trash into the vehicle.
- Operate truck and equipment using prescribed techniques to minimize driver-induced mechanical failures.
- Complete pre-trip and post-trip safety inspections and reports, daily truck reports, route sheets and other documentation requested by the supervisor.
- Communicate vehicle mechanical problems to the mechanic and supervisor immediately.
- Maintain route quality standards as determined by management.
- Follow all safety standards and equipment checks and comply with federal, state/provincial, local and company rules on safety and vehicle operation.
- Maintain a clean vehicle by cleaning the cab interior and exterior.
- Identify and tag prohibited waste items and remove the items from the waste cart or can.
- Manage assigned Helper(s) if applicable.
- Comply with applicable laws and company policies; follow directives from supervisors.
- Ensure that all required personal protective equipment is worn at all times.
- Report all accidents or incidents to supervisor(s) immediately.
- Exhibit a professional demeanor and appearance when meeting customers or the public on route or in uniform.
- Maintain accurate records of services performed and maintain inventory of containers, carts and spare parts; recommend purchases as needed.
- Work with supervisor to improve routing efficiencies.
- May be required to work overtime; attend safety and branch meetings; perform other duties as requested by management.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of the truck and its components and basic maintenance requirements for safe operation.
- Ability to control operations of equipment and maneuver the truck into and out of tight spaces, using mirrors to back distances.
- Ability to recognize unacceptable waste (e.g., gasoline or other flammable materials).
- Ability to communicate effectively with internal and external customers.
- Ability to read, write, and comprehend documents and maps; follow oral and written instructions.
- Flexibility to adapt to change and a commitment to continuous improvement.
- Physical ability to lift, push, pull or carry up to 50 pounds repetitively with proper technique.
- Coordination of multiple limbs while sitting or standing.
- Ability to follow all company safety policies and procedures.
Physical/Mental Demands
- Stand, walk, use hands, reach, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, talk, hear, climb, balance, and smell.
- Vision requirements include close, distance, color, peripheral, depth perception, and focus adjustment.
- Sit up to 75% of the time due to driving; ability to lift/move up to 100 pounds on occasion; frequently lift up to 25 pounds.
- Work in usually loud conditions.
Working Conditions
- Frequently exposed to loud noise, humidity, rain, heat and cold, moving parts, vibration, chemicals, fumes and airborne particles.
- Work in outdoor environments up to 100% of the time; work away from branch locations on a continuous basis; occasional exposure to high precarious places.
- Work around motor vehicle traffic conditions; work environment is usually loud.
